Microwave your money...
<a href="http://www.prisonplanet.com/022904rfidt ...

Seems that the new $20 bills, and larger, have active RFID tags. That fry in the microwave.

Or could it be that the ink just got too hot and burned the paper?
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Well if its the ink then one would expect the burning to be uniform throughout the bill or diffrent areas would burn first or somthing. But each billis burned in exactly the same place.

Looking at a bill I have in my pocket (well ok now its out in my hands... gosh darn hard to see stuff in my pockets ) anyways I notice that there isn't any special reason the ink in that one area should burn first, I mean the amount of ink in the area isn't a higher density then other areas nor is it special I think. This leads me to believe it is not the ink simply burning.

On a related note I don't think the government is tracking us. could it be its simply a way of preventing counterfiters you know making it harder to make money?

Update:

Someone else tried to duplicate this experiment and it failed. Results were reported to HardOCP.com.
Quote:
I tried this out this morning with a new $20.00 Series 2004 #EB121XXXXXX and it did not happen. I tried in the following times in the microwave: 30 Seconds, 60 Seconds, 5 Minutes. The only thing that happened is that the bill became more defined.

Re: Microwave your money...
My first thought was what kind of people are these who can destroy $1000 worth of $20 bills just to try and prove something that could be proved with just $60 worth. They didn't sound like they were insanely rich.

I think if I were to attempt a hoax like this, I'd color scan a $20 bill and print my own on regular paper (it's not like anyone will be able to tell they're not real when they're looking at them via .gif or .jpg on the Internet) and then use a lighter or a soldering iron to make the appropriate burns.

Then I just take a few snaps with the digital camera and then post 'em to the Internet. Bingo!, I'd be notorious as the fellow who discovered RFIDs in American currency. And as an added bonus, there'd be people all over the U.S. trying to microwave (or otherwise destroy) their money, looking for RFIDs. All because of me. What fun!
