Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

Any landing you can walk away from is one you didn't break your legs in.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

old pilot

Post by Dark Knife »

I remember a pilot in the 20's and 30's who use to buy bi-planes for like $100. usually older planes with not much left in them. He would then put on a show at events where he would 'barnstorm'. He would have a structure, usually a small movable barn and crash the plane into it. He had something like 80 preformances in his carrer, some with his wife, and survived them all.

Absolutely. There is an almost unbelievable amount of significant aviation history in the Mojave Desert. Still lots of plane wrecks too. On the west face of Mt. Baldy (Mt. San Antonio) there is still a complete WWII trainer / fighter which hit the side of the mountain in bad weather. I think there's a WWII bomber in the middle of the desert somewhere as well. I've always wanted to go see a bunch of the wrecks. One of these days I'll make a long weekend driving / hiking trip of it.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

There are a TON of wrecks at Edwards too. Most of them are classified (still) and a lot of them are just dents in the ground from the impact. But I know of three that exist and are within walking distance of where I work.

In one of those, the pilot died.

That, sadly is the price test pilots pay for pushing the boundaries of our aeronautical knowledge past what we know into the unknown, giving us things like the Space Shuttle, and Supersonic transports.

While it is a tragic thing that they died in a plane crash, it's because of them in part that air travel is so safe.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Saw the bomber in the Mojave. I love those old planes, heaping wrecks or not.
"Patience is a virtue ... for other people." -Ravok
