Hawking to give surprise black hole talk
<a href="http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.j ...

Seems as though he's had a change of thinking regarding his nearly 30-year old assertion that any information swallowed by a black hole is lost forever. It will be interesting to see (the translation of) what he says next week.

Re: Hawking to give surprise black hole talk
He's supposedly coming out with a modified version of the "classical" black hole. This newer version is a direct result of trying to get around a paradox that occurs if you have a definite event horizon. If that event horizon is smeared out instead of a definite boundary, then the paradox goes away. I forgot what the paradox was, but it's interesting.

Also, the idea of having a smeared out event horizon is a result of string theory too.
