Read the introductory material. Definitely check out the screen shots. This is pretty wild. One reader of the posting on lwn suggested that this was approaching Neuromancer-type cyberspace. It's not just a 3d desktop - there are several of those floating about. This is a 3d desktop plus fully collaborative environment with shared user spaces, and it works even with apps that aren't natively collaborative.
Why do I think this project might go somewhere? Because it has been (is being) created by some of the minds from Xerox PARC that brought us the concept of a windowed UI, back when the world was stuck in the DOS age.
Free your mind!

Sounds like a toy for a college computer network... though, with this, I can imagine huge corporations where nobody ever talks to eachother. (All communication is 'virtual'. ) Also nobody will ever see eachother... there will be virtual lectures from a virtual representation of the boss (the white rabbit? a demon?) I can also imagine a corporation implementing this OS and nothing will get done for months. Or at least until they figure out how to get employees to stop planting shrubberies on their virtual planets.
Also, with this the boss can see what every employee is doing at any time. If the boss' avatar is invisible, he can be watching you play solitaire and you wont even know it!
I see too much 'internet' and not enough business in their examples. BUT with the level of flexibility they imply I can see a productive business workspace. I'm just distracted by the entertaining side of it.
