Tablet PCs...

Well, the parents aren't quite convinced by my motorcycle idea. (I'm getting, "Not while you're still living in my house.") So its a new school laptop instead. My iPAQ always left me wanting a bigger screen because... well... you try taking calculus notes on a 4.5" screen. My old laptop also let me down when it came to calc, phys, and chem notes... any time I wanted to doodle a diagram or create an equation I was out of luck. (Well, there is Microsoft's equation editor, but that doesn't count because I never installed it and I don't think it was even integrated into the rest of Office but rather was its own program.)

Right now I'm looking at the Gateway CX200S "convertible" laptop/tablet. The next option would be one of the low end Toshibas. They are both around $1000 for the base model. (I want to come in under $1300 shipped.)

Anyone have any real experience with these? Will it finally replace pen and paper or will I go back to a good old fashioned 5 subject notebook and a set of $5 pens?

I'm going to have to go back to best buy and test the resolution of the handwriting of the Gateway machine. I'd be turned off if I had to write big. (i.e. can I write in the equivilant of 1 line on college ruled paper?)

My parents currently say, "At least you can't kill yourself with a laptop."

Well, that's only a 5.5"x3.1" device... so probably only a 5" screen. I was looking for something bigger. As I said, I've already an iPAQ. I'm after something along the lines of an 8.5"x11" for more practical use. (Sure my iPAQ was great even without wireless, but it was soon demoted to my Solitaire Machine™.) I'm after something that can act as both laptop and PDA. But thanks Gambit, that is a good deal for a Wi-Fi enabled PDA (though I wouldn't call it a tablet as its not quite big enough to write on).

I'm going to have to find a shop with the Toshiba tablet on display so I can compare it to the Gateway.

Also, I hate it when you have to search around for the price. :\

Ok, I compared the Toshiba and the Gateway side by side and decided that I couldn't live without the wide screen. Also I get better and smoother results from the fine point digitizer versus the more common Wacom digitizer.

Lets see what I can figure out about this thing in the coming weeks.
