Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

The miracles of RAID...

Post by XMEN Ashaman DTM »

I had a RAID-0 array built so that my data was safe. It had been almost a month since I had done my last backup.

And you can guess what happened last night...

Yep. That good ol' RAID array, with the nice backups... DIED.

It was partly my fault. I had disconnected one of the drives so that I could mirror the still-connected one of the pair with another disk. I ended up somehow (still not sure exactly), deleting the partition info from one of the good disks and copying everything with the bad partition info to the new disk. I still had one good disk, right? Wrong. For whatever reason neither of the "good disks" were readable. I know for a fact that I hadn't striped anything. I was purely moving the data around so that I could install ubuntu on one of the disks (the smaller one). I had done this before, and everything worked out fine.

So I've spent most of today getting an old backup running, reinstalling windows, updating windows, reinstalling office, updating office, and updating drivers. Need to have office going for my wife's grades.

Yep. The last backup didn't have the latest grades (none from the current trimester, in fact). She's got all of the papers, so it's no big deal. Except that it will take a couple of days to get everything back in.

Here's the kicker for me: almost all of my own business info was lost. I've started up a small business on the side. I'm aiming solely at small business R&D contracts for the government. My three proposals that I worked on all of the last two weeks are gone.

The wedding threw off the schedule for backups, and I didn't think about doing one prior to last night's... fun.

The nice part is that both my wife and I know what we lost and can reconstruct it with some minor pains.

That was my weekend! How are you all doing?

My life isn't nearly as fun as yours, I can assure you, but we're inside a month till I get married, so that's pretty exciting. :D Other than that, nothing much. :D
