I took a subscription to Make magazine. It's a magazine for folks who like to tinker with mechanical or electronic things. While robotics does get a lot of exposure it's far from exclusive. Always has some gee-whiz out there stuff that someone built as well as a number of much more practical ideas (and plans). And the "Maker Shed" is their store. Goodies from mini-microcontrollers to kits to lockpicks.
Spend a few minutes poking around. I think you'll find it intriguing.
