Went to feed my brother's critters...

Post by BlackRider »

...and I slipped on ice and broke my ego. Not only that, but I've got an ugly gash and both knees are swelling. I just hope the swelling goes down so I can walk the 1/4 mile from the garage to my first class tomorrow with some amount to dignity. :P

Because it was cold and I was used to having sore knees I kept trudging along... that is until my blue jeans turned purple. Now I'm going to have a scar on my left knee to match the 1 1/4" one on the right. I decided not to go to the hospital because they charge $$$ just to look at it and see if it needs stitches or not. Besides, I've determined that it doesn't. (I'm becoming sort of an expert on what needs stitches and what doesn't... 3 to close up my eyebrow so it wouldn't sag after a big gash, 7 to put the tip of my little finger back on, 3 staples to close the top of my head after an argument with a hockey puck, etc etc... and lots that just needed a tight band-aid to hold closed and that's all this needs.) I just don't like damaging my poor knees... I need those for soccer. Can't play w/ puffy knees. :P

What kind of accidents have you people had to deal with? (I got my little finger caught in a door and nearly pinched it off at the 1st joint from the tip. Instead of being pinched off it got rotated 180 degrees. I'm just glad I got feeling back.)
COLORS!

Ouch! Sorry about your fall. Though unfortunately it'll probably feel worse tomorrow than today.

But I got a couple good stories, since you asked.

I once was sitting on a wall and fell off. Not a long fall, and normally wouldn't have hurt me a bit (10 feet or so, onto grass.) But when I tried to get up, my leg didn't move from the evergreen bush it'd fallen into. Turned out I'd skewered myself, right though my calf muscle, but didn't feel a thing. Carefully pulled my leg off the bush. Hardly any blood. Hobbled off to find my parents, who took me to the doc. They looked at it, and very painfully injected painkillers, washed it out with freezing cold saline, and did NOT stitch it up because it was possible I might have something in there. Sure enough, about a week later as I washed the wound, I plucked out a leaf, nearly perfectly preserved except a little black around the edges.

Then there was another time I got run over by a canoe. I was standing on a low-water bridge, in high water, with several other people, on a floating trip. Some joker decides he wants to take his canoe over the bridge since there was about a three foot drop on the downriver side. He paddles up, and loses control just before the bridge. The current turned the canoe sideways, filled it full of water, and shoved it at the bridge FAST. The guys on my left jumped left, the guys on my right jumped right, but the thing was coming at me so square I didn't have much chance to get out of the way. Aluminum canoe, about 10 feet long, full of water, plows me over the bridge and scrapes itself across my foot. Nothing more serious than a little scraped skin, fortunately, but a canoe full of water weighs a LOT and it was really moving.

What a dumbass!

I've got a couple....

I'm swimming my freshman year of highschool. I'm at league and I'm swimming my favorite event: 200m Free. (That's still my fave.)

I'm sleeping most of the morning until about 20 minutes before my first heat. I realize that I didn't shave the night before. A friend of mine realized the same thing so we both took razors and went to the shower room to shave our legs real quick. We used hand soap out of the dispenser so that the razor for shave cream. It didn't work well. I shaved my arms and my left leg, then I started on my right. I get the hair off of my thigh, then start on my lower leg. I start shaving my shin and fell a slight prick. I look closely at the razor and unfold a 10 inch by 1 inch strip of skin from it. The prick was when I pulled the razor away and the skin pulled out from it. I had a bare spot on my shin.

Technically, I wasn't supposed to hop in the pool. But as a swimmer, I knew that pools are rarely free of nasty stuff like blood, vomit, urine, scabs, and bandaids. So I rinsed it off real quick, finished shaving, and towelled myself dry.

Just as I finished, my race was coming up so I grabbed my goggles and got into my lane (I was lane 1... ranked by best times during the season). I got up on the starting block, and did my start as soon as the horn sounded. As soon as I hit the water, my leg burned from the chlorine. It didn't bleed. Just burned like crazy. I forgot it when I was coming back on my first lap and realized that I had nearly lapped the other 5 people in the heat. Then I wondered why everyone was yelling at me and when I got done, I had shaved off a LOT of time off my best time in the season. I ended up with just under 2 minutes (I think it was 1:53). That's a good time, but I didn't go to state.

The other story was when I was bike riding. I came down a trail a bit too fast and ended up having to make a sharp turn in some loose rocks. I slid off the trail and ended up bailing just before flying into a bush. Instead of landing in the bush, I ended up taking out a tree! I had hit a tree with my chest and front part of my helmet and the tree lost. The tree was only about 2 inches in diameter, but it was not fun. My helmet was shattered and my front tire was turned into a taco. In short, it was a long walk back to the car that sucked.

My other story was when I was emptying the grass catcher bag on the lawn mower into a compost pile behind my parent's garage. There were a few boards back there from when the neighbor built a fence. I found out that one of those boards had a 3 1/2 inch nail still in it. The thing went through my shoe, through my foot and out the top of my shoe. It didn't hurt, but it did throb and bled a whole lot after I pulled it out. I was pissed off too, which probably didn't help. I ended up trying to rip the nail out of the board with my hand and breaking it off. Then I pulled the other side out and hurled both pieces into the neighbor's yard.

I didn't need stitches or a tetanus shot. The holes closed up just fine, and I had a tetanus shot a few months prior for stepping on a different nail. Hehe.

yes, but not from falling! :P

I used to play soccer two seasons per year and so I ran everyday to keep in shape. That's a lot of running. Especially when we play 45 min halves and I don't get a sub. (We tended to have 11-13 players show and, if you didn't know, a full soccer field has 11 players per team.) So it wasn't uncommon that I'd run 90 mins with only a 5 min break in the middle. On top of that I played midfield, so I was almost constantly running the length of the field. Naturally, all of the ruined my knees in no time. The Dr. said that all of that running and no lifting caused an imbalance in the musculature of my legs causing bone to grind on bone. That ended my soccer career, but I hope to be able to start playing recreational soccer again soon.
COLORS!

Does anybody else want to explain what I was inferring with the sore knees, or should I just leave it alone?

When I was eight I ran a sled into a stone picnic table, smashing up my face. I split my left cheek open, clear through, starting at the corner of my mouth. So there were just two flaps about 3 inches long, and it hooks upward. That took 105 stitches to patch up, and I got a cool scar out of it. Plus my two front teeth are porcelain now, but for awhile I had one of them with half of it split off diagonally. Unless you're counting teeth, I have never broken a bone, which surprises me all the time.
