Big bad computer!
Last night I just finished building the most impressive machine that I have ever built. I was contracted to build a custom computer to replace an analog video recording system in a security company that handles all the money from ATM machines.

The computer is going to have 16 digital video feeds coming into it and it will take 1-2 frames per second from each camera. The cameras record the process of unloading, transporting, and counting of the cash.

Specs:
Enlight Mid-Tower Server Case
450 watt Antec Powersupply
AMD XP 2800+ Barton
Asus A7V600 Motherboard
1 GB Corsair RAM
ATI 9200 Video Card
One Western Digital 40gb 7200rpm Drive (Boot Drive)
Two Western Digital 160gb Drives (Video Storage) 320gb total.
Lite-on 52x CDRW Drive
Windows 2000 Pro SP2

I must say she is pretty sweet in that all black setup.

It is pretty interesting. We are supposed to get the capture cards in later this week then we can test it.

Wow.. That's a fairly impressive machine for video capture..

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Well, you'd need it in that application. It's not just putting home movies on CD, y'know... Skip too many frames and you miss an employee doing sleight-of-hand.

I'm kind of surprised that there's no RAID. I'd think they'd want that security (I sure would).

Howzabout a nice UPS? I realize you'd have no video with the power out, anyway, but when it does come back on you'd want to know how long it'd been out, and you'd want your vidcap to pick up those first few seconds rather than waiting for the system to boot up.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

The motherboard is equipped with SATA Raid. But right now the budget and the price of the drives prohibit it. Also putting those drives in a RAID config would limit us to about 45 days of video per our calcs. We need at least 90 days of storage before it is archived on CD's.

We are going to pick up the UPS tonight at Frys. I will connect it via USB of course to the System and I will set it up for a gentle shutdown.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... ceman>XMEN Iceman at: 2/10/04 10:34 am

A budget when they are protecting hundreds of thousands of sollars in cash? Seems like they would want to spend whatever it takes to get the best, most reliable system. Personally I would have set up a RAID 0+1. I owuld also have the cameras on battery backup along with automatic security lights.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Yeah...I know what you mean. My neighbor is the minor partner/owner of the company. So he had to "sell" the major partner on it. They actually have mainly 486/Pentium 1 and old Macs they use for other functions. This is the first step in getting them modernized. We are also working on a new network/server setup for their shop. They move alot of money...but none of it is theirs.
