Actually Porsche is much, much more into it than me. I just took a vacation with a borrowed Olympus C8080, and liked the experience and the results, so now I have the itch to replace my old Canon 2MP point-n-shoot.
Considering getting a D70 from a friend of his, or a Rebel XT.
Incidentally, I didn't take those vacation pics as RAW either.

Forget the Rebel, and try to find a good 10D, or save up a few more $$ and get the 30D. That is, if you want to go Canon.
I know that shooting JPEG gives you more images per card than RAW will, but working in RAW will give you the ability to fix those little things that may have gotten by you during those busy moments.
You can fix white Balance and even exposure. I was able to save some screw ups after I shot a wedding, and during the reception, I somehow kept pressing the dial on the back of my 10D, which kept pushing the exposure down. Some of the shots were a good 2 stops underexposed, and I was able to bring them back after getting them into the computer.
