If you liked Shogun, you may want to try some Michener. <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>Hawaii</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->, or <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em><!--EZCODE LINK START--><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 09-8910553" target="top">Centennial</a><!--EZCODE LINK END--></em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->, for example.<br><br>Want some good scifi/psychic stuff, that sticks with a premise but doesn't take itself to seriously? I've been reading some Julian May lately - try <!--EZCODE LINK START--><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... s&n=507846" target="top"><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>Jack the Bodiless</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->.</a><!--EZCODE LINK END--><br><br>There's always the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy if you want some humor. <p><!--EZCODE IMAGE START--><img src="http://www.xmenclan.org/xmengambit.gif"/><!--EZCODE IMAGE END--><br>XMEN member<br>Card-carrying DTM<br>OKL Fish-napper<br><br>Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.<br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em> The Tao of Programming</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--></p><i></i>

"Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand is a good book, although it may be difficult to get into . <p></p><i></i>

Michener's books are usually pretty fat, like Shogun. <br>The Julian May book I mentioned is one book out of three related series; the entire 9-book set has been keeping me busy for a while. <p></p><i></i>

Oooh!! I know!<br><br>First, read <!--EZCODE LINK START--><a href="http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,60828,00.html" target="top">this article</a><!--EZCODE LINK END--> about how video evidence is useful both in prosecuting illegal activities by individuals and governments, and in preventing them, too.<br><br>Then, take note of this book by David Brin, <!--EZCODE LINK START--><a href="http://www.j-bradford-delong.net/Econ_A ... arent.html" target="top"><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>The Transparent Society</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->.</a><!--EZCODE LINK END--> It's a discussion of possible changes to our society that will happen as a result of the proliferation of information, like home video and spycams. Brin firmly maintains that society is and will be changed because of these things, and that the only question is "How?"<br><br> <p></p><i></i>

One of the best books I have ever read was a Science Fiction book , good sized in it's day and it contained Espers, dragons, robots, and any other feature you would ever want in a story.<br><br>The book was "The Bloody Sun" by J.R. Jepson , who has gone by a few names. As far as I know, it is still available.<br><br>Ciggie<br><br>Cgynus[DTM] <p>http://home.cinci.rr.com/ctulanko/cgynu ... ><i>Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... >Cgynus</A> at: 10/17/03 10:57 am<br></i>

No posts today. So I'll just *bump* this old one. :)

I'm re-reading Lord of the Rings, not that that's new and different or anything....

If you like mysteries of any kind, I can highly recommend Lindsey Davis. She writes her mysteries as set in ancient Rome, and she does a great deal of research to make them as authentic as possible. Here's her first book, Silver Pigs. Falco (the protagonist) is a wise-ass, but he's a funny wise-ass.

For science stuff, Stephen Hawking's The Universe in a Nutshell is also quite good. It can get quite brain-bending right around chapter 3 (took me a while to wrap my head around light cones), but if you can get everything figured out, it's an excellent read.

I will second A Game of Thrones. I just wish the author would hurry up and finish the next book... we've all been waiting for a good long while now.

For graphic novels, I have to recommend that king of them all Watchmen. It's a bit dated these days due to the change in our political climate, but it's an awesome deconstruction of the super-hero, and perhaps best of all, the ending isn't neat and pretty. I can remember several nights where I couldn't sleep because I was turning over in my head the question the ending posed to the reader.

Watchmen is some heavy stuff. It's a piece of work that I think more teachers should use in higher education literature classes.

I picked up the hardcover HHGTTG all-in-one a while back for like $5 at a clearance. At that price, it was a must-have. :)

I liked War and Peace,

some good non-classical books to read
Purpose Driven Life is a good book,
and then there is the Bible. ;) I read the whole thing in Iraq, I also had a lot of time on my hands.

Been reading Brian Greene's Fabric of the Cosmos. Very interesting book that expands a bit upon the fundamental ideas behind string theory. And not a single equation! So far (I'm only about 2/3 of the way through it), the book has gone over most of the major approaches in modern physics (classical or newtonian physics, relativity - with a neato-one-paragraph explanation of relativity, and quantum mechanics). Brian Greene really breaks things down to the level that they should be so that things are pretty easy to understand. He also, as I've noticed from his other book The Elegant Universe, has a knack for giving really good imagery to help explain the concepts of physics. He hasn't tied everything together into string theory yet, but he will.

The funny thing is that I think that string theory is on the right path, but only tells part of the picture like QM, classical, or relativity. I'm starting to wonder if there is a simpler approach that still ties a lot of things together.
