Well, sine Mav couldn't be bothered to explain his link, I'll do it.

It IS addictig and fun.

The link is to a fan site for the bridge-builder series of games. You can download the full version of the first game and demos to two others. So far I've only played the first one. The graphics are simple and there's no sound, at least in that one, but the purpose of the game is to build a bridge that will support the weight of a train crossing it. You have a budget - each beam that is used, long or short, costs $100. There are points to which you can attach beams. There's an edit mode where you place the beams, and a test mode where you can monitor the stresses of the structure. When you think you're ready, send the train across, and if it doesn't fall in the drink you move to the next level.

Most levels have many possible solutions. Levels with extra-tight budgets have fewer possibilities. The "mount points" you are given to start with will often determine certain basic characteristics, like one with one point on each end and a third high above and between - hmm... suspension bridge?

If you ever tried to build something out of toothpicks, legos, tinkertoys, or an erector set, give it a try. It's a pretty small download.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

I hope people aren't that lazy. It's all in the instructions!
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Um, you're too lazy to type in a sentence or two to describe your link, and then you hope other people aren't too lazy to click your link, download a file, unzip it, and run it to read the instructions? (or dig around on a website to find them?)

Hmm.

I don't ask people who post links to do what I did, which is halfway to a review of the thing. (I just go and do that when I really like something.) What I do ask them to do is to simply tell readers why they should be interested enough to investigate further.

I think he thought that the link title would have explained it and people would have known what it would have been about. Thats what I got.
<a href="http://www.thzclan.com/cam/index.php?zo ...

since bridge builder is really old news, I thought we discussed it on this board before... but if not I know I saw it at least 6 months ago on a diffrent board, so I knew what it was.

But I agree you should of described what Bridge builder was so people don't have to click your link to find out its a game about building bridges for trains to cross.

I only have one complaint about the game itself, now that I downloaded it onto my new computer, it runs to frigging fast, even in slow mode, when I click the test button the train flys accross the screen so fast I can't really determine whats going on as far as stress levels. anybody know of a way of slowing it down even more?

(who would have thought ythere be a day when computers were too fast )

THAT'S a strange problem. The train is supposed to move pretty slowly, and does on mine - and I have an 1800XP. I'm sure your system is faster than mine, but I can't see this game straining even my wife's 500 MHz Celeron. The game should be using timing information.

Have you searched the boards for similar issues?

Hey, Mav, whaddya mean level 14?

I'm having enough trouble with level 13. I've got pretty close but keep hitting the budget limit.

Well the link itself says it's a bridge building game. I suppose I could add that there's a train that tests the strength of the bridge but everything you need to know comes up immediately when you click the link.

There are a couple levels that are challenging mainly because of a low budget. Level 15 is the most fun.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

It is a fun game, although since I'm by no means a physics type, nor have I ever studied physics, Level 6 has me stumped a bit. I can get the bridge to support itself, but the train kills it every time.. I'm trying and trying, so we'll see if I ever see level 7.. I know that much. It's hard t get enough structure to support itself w/o putting too much in the center w/o a support from the bottom.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

I kept trying to build suspension-type bridges. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't.

Hint: Sometimes the structure that gets you through a level is an arch, rather than just triangles.
