NC State Scientists Develop Breakthrough Internet Protocol

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Researchers in North Carolina State University’s Department of Computer Science have developed a new data transfer protocol for the Internet that makes today’s high-speed Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connections seem lethargic.

The protocol is named BIC-TCP, which stands for Binary Increase Congestion Transmission Control Protocol. In a recent comparative study run by the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), BIC consistently topped the rankings in a set of experiments that determined its stability, scalability and fairness in comparison with other protocols. The study tested six other protocols developed by researchers from schools around the world, including the California Institute of Technology and the University College of London.

Dr. Injong Rhee, associate professor of computer science, said BIC can achieve speeds roughly 6,000 times that of DSL and 150,000 times that of current modems. While this might translate into music downloads in the blink of an eye, the true value of such a super-powered protocol is a real eye-opener.

See the entire article here: Link

<embed align=left src=http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf menu=false quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=217 height=166 type=application/x-shockwave-flash pluginspage=http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

You weren't much of a challenge - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... ceman>XMEN Iceman at: 3/18/04 9:30 am

So is this more likely to hit the public market rather than like <a href="http://internet.about.com/b/a/003881.ht ... which was said to probably never make it?

Tribes Clan DB - List your Tribes1/2 Clan, Guild, Fansite, League, or Script site
Gryphon, LLC - My WebDev Adventures
PlanetTribes - Adminstrator
PlanetSide Universe - Code Monkey
PlanetSide Shuttle - Newsie Extraordinaire
Allied Tribal Forces - A PlanetSide alliance started by Tribesplayers

Here's a link to the PDF version of the paper in question.

The thing needs a glossary, for sure, but reading through it seems to suggest that this new protocol does a couple of neat things.

1. It's more aggressive with window sizes--currently, your average broadband connection stays at a size of 1500 and crams packets in and around that size. This protocol, from what I read, tries to detect available bandwidth and scale up the window size, thus letting your machine transfer more data in one shot. Cool, especially for those long downloads.

2. An improved routing protocol. I haven't kept up on TCP routing in a good long while, but I remember it being fairly static--routers maintain tables of connections on their own, and change them when several connections fail to go through. This new protocol, says the paper, is gonna change up its routing table on the fly, determined by packetloss over its connections. An interesting idea, at least.

I don't think, however, that this new protocol will do much for dialup users. There's physical limits in a dialup connection that just can't be breached right now.

Just another tool for people like SW to increase their MA shots five fold!!!
DOH!!!
But I didnt see the consumer possible use of this technology. Will it affordable comparable to DSL? Or is it only gonna be possible to use for the next twenty five years amoung research and high volume networks?

It's a protocol, DK, not a physical connection layer. Software instead of hardware, so to speak. Should run just fine on any broadband connection, but the problem is getting everyone to adopt it. TCP/IP is a pretty sound protocol as it stands now, and a juggernaut besides... lots of inertia to keep it in place.

If this is adopted, it will most likely be between universities at first, much like Internet2 is now.
