Working on my car audio.

For those of you...most of you...never knew that back in the 80's I managed a car stereo store for about 2 years...and was an installer for 3 years. That accounts for most of my current deafness. So of course when I listen to my music I have to crank it up loud.

Anyway, I decided this week that I was sick and tired of my current system in my truck. So I started acquiring pieces to the puzzle this week.

Did you know that holiday weekends are the best time to search Ebay for deals. Everyone is out at the lake getting drunk.

First acquistion:
Brand New Clarion DXZ545MP CD/MP3 Player Sirius Ready
Typically $199. Got it off Ebay for $108.

Second: An oldie but a goodie... Dr. Crankenstein 2X80W Stereo Amplifier, gonna run it 160 watt Bridged Mono Output to the Subwoofer.
Got it for $15.00

Third: Rockford Fosgate RFZ3810 Punch Z Sub 10" Subwoofer
Typically $40-60. Got it off Ebay for $16.00

---------------------------------------------------
I already have some midrange/tweeters in the dash, will run them off the radio power, then I also have a 70 watt amp running some JBL 6x9's in the rear quarter panels. So I add the new amp to the subwoofer and build it into the rear seat bench in my Extended Cab Toyota pickup. It ought to sound MUCH better than the old Pioneer CD unit I have now. I am going to take the truck over to a friend who is a cabinet maker to help me make the sub mounting plate.

This makes me feel young again. LOL! <img src=http://www.contrabandent.com/cwm/s/cont ... freakB.gif ALT=":duh">

<embed align=left src=http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf menu=false quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=217 height=166 type=application/x-shockwave-flash pluginspage=http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

You weren't much of a challenge - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p090.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.showU ... ceman>XMEN Iceman at: 5/30/04 10:57 pm

hehe.. It's always nice to have a decent sounding stereo in your car/truck, especially if you spend any great amount of time in it.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

I am selling my old Pioneer CD player for $25 to anyone who wants it. It is rough but it works. It is a single DIN unit.
Plays CD's and most CDRW's.

<embed align=left src=http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf menu=false quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=217 height=166 type=application/x-shockwave-flash pluginspage=http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

You weren't much of a challenge - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

I took the radio out of my car. If you enjoy your car then you enjoy driving. If you enjoy driving then you don't need a radio. Then again I'm a mutant.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Don't get me wrong- I love to drive. I may not have a super nice car, but it's good enough to get me to where I need to go comfortably, but I still need a radio. I got a Kenwood 45w x 4 CD deck for my birthday in April, and put it in my car, and it's been a great thing. It actually remembers the stations I set! the factory deck that was in it hadn't ever remembered the stations I would set... Checked all the fuses, and they were all good, but when I went to Best Buy for them to install the new deck, they said one was missing... He wouldn't tell me where, but it must have been a fusable link under the hood somewhere....

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

When I was driving my beemer I could barely get 5 minutes into a drive before I had to turn on the radio. I was driving the wrong car. Sold it last month. In the right car I can drive all day without getting bored. So I went to the garage and got in the first car I ever owned. Once again it's my daily driver and I've never been happier. I'm driving the right car.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

I think the "right car" depends on where you're driving. For example:

If I'm sitting in traffic on my daily commute, I want a very comfortable car, good air conditioning, sound system, and so on. Good milage is a factor but we're talking about driver "feel" here, right?

If I'm out of the city and driving on twisty roads, I want a nimble car that lets me feel the road and with great brakes and acceleration.

If I'm driving on gravel roads, I want something tough with good clearance, big tires, and long wheel base.

Traffic, sports car. Twisty road, sports car! Gravel roads, yep, sports car. Comfy enough for commuting, nimble enough for traffic, able enough for twisties and so long as the gravel isn't deep, it'll do fine there as well. Heck, I beat a buddy in his suburban in an of road race once on dirt roads with this same car.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Dude, I used to live in Arkansas. We took my wife's Camaro to see my grandfather once, and it was a bad thing...

I suspect that your definition of "gravel road" and mine differ substantially.

"I beat a buddy in his suburban in an off road race once on dirt roads..." Um, oxymoron. If it's a road, even dirt, it ain't off-road in my book. Refer to suspicion above.

Heh! Yeah I guess it was an oxymoron. I should have said off-highway. It was hard-packed although heavily rutted dirt fireroad. The hardpack part is why I beat him. Same reason rally cars are faster than off-road trucks. But as I said before, the gravel can't be very deep!
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

My Cavalier fots all those requirements Gambit described for Traffic, and it's good to me, but I dunno.. I guess I'm just more the type to have music with me wherever I go. But on Dirt Roads, give me my Old Subaru Wagon, and I'd race most anyone.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Headunit is in...so nice it hurts!!! It made my old amp and speakers sound so much better.

Got the larger power cable run from the battery but waiting on the amp to arrive in the next day or two.

I got my two Rockford Fosgate Sub's in. They are beautiful, but they are so deep I will have to move one of my amps under my seat to make it fit. I cut a plate out to replace the hatch cover that goes over some storage space underneath the rear seats. I cut a sub opening in the cover, I will mount the sub to it, put a grill over it, then upholster new carpet over it to make it blend in.

A friend of mine has a sub mounted in the same location...but his truck is a little more tricked out than mine.

<embed align=left src=http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf menu=false quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=217 height=166 type=application/x-shockwave-flash pluginspage=http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

You weren't much of a challenge - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!
