I think I'm going to be able to upgrade before the LAN party. w00t! Made my first purchase today:

<a href="http://www.accurateit.com/details.asp?i ...

19-inch refurb Trinitron CRT, shipped, for $155. Great reviews on the monitor, good reviews on the seller. We'll see how it performs.

FYI, I paid about $400 for my trusty refurbed 17-inch, back in '96 or so, and it's held up very well though it was a steal of a deal back then.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

350 for my 17" Optiquest monitor back from 1998. Still going perfectly strong too! Perfect color, perfect everything. Don't have to touch any of the alignment settings unless the power is taken away, and even then, the numbers are always the same.

I think I'll be upgrading here soon as well. My comp is a bit old.

I bought a 19" EDC CRT in 1999 for $350, but it's getting worn out and showing it's age a bit.. probably from riding in cars from MN to TX too much.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Quote:
I paid like 190 for my 19" KDS flat screen CRT and it was brand spankin new !

Yes, I could have done something like that, but I'm very picky about my monitors.

For starters, this is a Trinitron. That means it's extra sharp, theoretically. I need the extra sharpness so I can work in high-res (programming) with many windows open at once. And it's nice for gaming, too! I hope the .24 aperture is small enough that the stripes won't bug me, though.

Secondly, it will run 1600x1200 at 85 Hz. Not too many monitors will do that. 60Hz makes my eyes hurt instantly, and I can sometimes even see a 70Hz flicker.

Thirdly, in a 2002 issue of PCWorld, this monitor was ranked
#3 or #4 overall, was the ONLY one listed as having "excellent" text quality, and was listed so low because it was the "most expensive monitor in the roundup" at a retail price of nearly $600. Today you still have trouble finding new ones for much less than $400.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

I got it today and set it up. It's purty. The flat screen looks a little weird, but it's nice. 1600x1200 and no flicker!

I got a great deal on a 21" SGI CRT (Sony AG tube) with dual video input. Of course I actually originally bought a cheaper 22" NEC but they sent me a bad monitor. I had to spend 3 months calling them and the BBB before I finally caught them in a lie. They were trying to convince me to call Fed-Ex and claimn that they broke it. I got through to a manager on the next call and threatened to call Fed-Ex and report they were commiting fraud.

They ended up paying for my return shipping($60), having Fed-Ex pick it up at my door and they let me choose any monitor they had in stock to ship back. Funny thing is...I still called Fed-Ex and reported them after I got the SGI monitor. They were crooks and needed to be reported.

Only thing is the monitor weighs more than I do. It going to cost me an extra $20 in gas just to haul it to the LAN party.

EDIT:
Hey they have my monitor. But this one may not have the dual-input: 21" SGI

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p090.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.showU ... t at: 9/7/04 7:26 pm

Uh-huh.

Relative to the market, it'll be the best system I ever built.

Side note: There's an article I found on anandtech comparing A64, Sempron, and regular A-XP chips running 32-bit apps. The Semprons had nearly the performance gain over the XPs as the A64s, because socket 754 CPUs (and 939s) have the memory controller on the die. Not really a surprise to most people, but there's the hard evidence.

My point is, you can get smokin' performance out of a Sempron without dropping the extra change on an A64. Personally, I wanted the A64 anyway because I don't get new systems very often and want it to last.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

Sempron is a Barton (AthlonXP) that is built like an A64 and fits in the same socket. It's 32 bit, but has the on-die memory controller and a few other little tweaks.
