Tribes: Vengeance redux

Post by XMEN Gambit »

When T:V came out, I bought it. In time for the LAN party, so the timing was great. I played maybe halfway through the single-player campaign at the time, and fooled around with it a little online and at the LAN. I didn't have a strong positive or negative feeling toward the game; it was reasonably fun and part of the Tribes franchise, after all. Fine. A few weeks after the LAN I put it on the shelf and ignored it. Until last week.

Keep in mind that I've not been playing T1 or T2 during this time. I was determined to finish my single-player game. Being the Tribes veteran that I am, I decided there wasn't much point in playing on EASY or NORMAL levels, so when I started the game I chose HARD. Y'know, there are some levels in that game that are darn near freakin' impossible at that setting! Had to strain my cranium and wrists to get through them. Pretty much the way it should be.

Since I had some free time, and having finished the game, finally, I jumped online to slake my thirst. And you know, it's actually been a lot of fun lately. Not sure why; I'm not picking any particular server or finding any buddies to play with (couldn't find any of you guys, duh). I did get one backhanded compliment from the other side once: "That guy that just shot me with the rocket pod is the only guy on your team with any skill" which I found amusing.

But the point is, try playing T:V after being on a Tribes diet for a while. You might like it.

I just can't do it anymore. The game is just too simplified and people who are good at the game have a huge lead over those who are average.

When Tribes first came out, it was slow, huge, and new. There was a great community and the game was very social. Tribes 2 added some great social features and made the game even bigger, but attitudes of a lot of downers ruined the community. Tribes V is way too simplified, maps are small and fast is too fast, there is no socializing while playing at all, even teamspeak or chat you just can't concentrate, you just blindly kill red over and over with such a feverish pace there a void in anything social. I may as well be playing bots.

I think I am taking a long long break from small map FPS games. I really like the slow pace of MMO games, even MMOFPS like PlanetSide. There is lots of downtime and slow pace to be friends with the people you are playing with. That is my main draw to multiplayer games, to have fun, chat, and goof around with friends. If I never get to play with anyone I can socialize with, it kills the game for me.

I need to finish school before I really get into games again, just because I'm away from my family so much. But soon, May is not too far off.

Would have to say Gryphon put it as GOOD as it gets in how the game is. Not impressed one bit myself. NO learning curb to it at all. I remember when guys like Sidewinder and Anubis would join , and I think damn about to get smoked from now on. But as I got better I would win once in a while. I felt pride then, for I had moved up in the food chain. But TV seems to take little skill IMO. I know their is some if not alot , but it feels like T1 to much for my liking.. :?

Funny you should say that when a lot of folks still like T1 better than T2. :)

I'll definitely grant that it's usually faster-paced than its predecessors. However, the skillz and learning curve are still there; they're just different. I was in a server the other day when a guy actually WALKED about half the distance back to base with the nme flag. And CAPPED it! I remember thinking at the time, "What a bunch of newbs!" But, really, isn't what you miss about T1 the feeling you got as a newb making discoveries about how the game worked in real life, no matter what the manual said? And the folks you did that with?

I don't say that I'm all that "impressed" with the game myself. But I will say that the game has it's own potential, and the fun you have with it really depends on the community you're playing with. If you only spend time in any game with a bunch of jerks or silent strangers, you're not going to like that game much. I think there is an opportunity here for a group like the DTM, TPG, or people sharing those ideals to really influence the world of T:V. So, don't be a jerk OR a silent stranger.

I can't drag anyone into it, though. Just won't work. So, the XMEN will have to change with the times or cease to be. We'll have to recruit from people playing T:V, or we'll have to shift our focus away from the Tribes franchise.

As you say so still like T1 , some never did.. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Just seems the game is a huge disappointment over all to most I talked to. Shame really, I was looking so forward to it. :(
