Political question...

What do you think the world response would be if the US walked out of the UN and confiscated the UN Building? Also, if the UN tries to run our government (taxing us, altering out laws, etc.) should we walk out of the UN? I know we are kind of taxed for the UN when congress gives money to the UN, but there is talk of more direct methods of taxing the world for UN efforts. I really don't like the UN, but I have to collect my thoughts and research some more before I say exactly why.

Previous political discussions have remained civil, so I hope this is a safe topic.

Can't "take" the UN building. It's international territory. Oh we could walk in and claim it, but it'd be the best way to start a war with everyone else (except britain and canada). And it would be pointless.

And the UN can't try to run our government. Each nation makes it's own laws, and sets up it's own interactions with other nations. The UN is there more to keep things going where people have basic human rights, which they don't always enforce (and I don't know why).

We currently give the most money to the UN, but we also are behind in what we said we'd give.

The only things the member nations have to supply to the UN are money, representatives, and occasionally troops. And US troops take orders from US commanders first while assigned to a UN tour. So if a Russian commander ordered US troops into a place where US troops were already fighting, the local US commander could (according to US doctrine) take over that unit's US troops. It's never happened, but it's come close to happening.

I would say don't worry about the UN so much. The US won't ever do anything that doesn't benefit the US in some manner. Even if that means keeping peace by donating 2000 tons of food somewhere to prevent civil war. And the US, France, Russia, China, and UK are the ones that control the UN forces; they're ultimately the ones that approve UN military actions. And if push comes to shove, the US WILL withdraw its troops that it supplied to the UN, and pull all the money and aid it gives. Any other country can do the same.

The main reason to have a UN is that it allows countries to talk to each other, even when there are no official channels like with Iran and the US. The only other option is to send in secret diplomats and try to work something on an unofficial level.

It'll happen, someday. Probably sooner than you think. Not that I think that's a good thing. By "it" I mean a world government, whether UN or its successor. And it'll be corrupt, I'll bet money on it.
