You put an AMD athlon XP2000+, 1.67GHz. and 256mb ram.

1 of those would be enough Beast.. 768Mb is enough RAM for most anything still... UNless you're gonna play Planetside, in which case you need 4Gb of PC6700 DDR7, a 10GB swap file, the fastest Video card and CPU known to man.. the ever Elusive P6 @ 9.237GHz.. with the Nvidia GF12 11000.
In case you haven't noticed, I'm not too happy with Planetside, and their lack of fixing performance problems in their patches, when before their patches, there were no problems to begin with... So I don't play PS anymore.

I've got 2Gigs DDR PC 3200 in my system now. Waiting for Christmas to ge the other 2Gigs in...
Since we last met... I've rebuilt the Hog...
3.4 P4, 2Gig DDR, 160G Maxtor HDD, Radeon 9800 256 PRO... thats pretty much it. Nothing else that is too impressive.
Going from a 1.6 to a 3.4 and from 768 to 2Gig of ram has totally made things different.

That's a sweet system WC. Mine's not anywhere as cool as that one, but my Laptop's not too far behind.

I had to get one for school, because my schedule is so screwy. It's an HP ZX5000 P4 3GHz, 1Gb DDR, 128Mb Radeon 9600 60Gb 5400 RPM HDD. It's nice and qucik, with integrated wireless, and a 15.4" widescren, it's nice.

WC...how much power would you need in that laptop???

Currently, something basic. no less than a 1Gig. I can deal with that. 512Mb of Ram... I really don't know I have never used a laptop and don't know what they would require. I would currently need it only for travel word processing and possible music while on the go.

Then a centrino equipped notebook or an iBook would be perfect. Pretty much even the cheapest ones with 512Mb RAM would be enough for ya.

Obviously going for cost balance here. I can't afford to fork out more than a few $100.00 on a laptop. Maybe after Christmas but not until then.

The needs you describe do not require that much CPU. 512MB is kind of unusual in an older laptop like that, so if you had that much memory you can be very flexible on CPU. For example, my notebook is a 1 Gig P3 with XP Home, and I'm quite comfortable with it. Might not want to put Office 2k3 on it, but 2k would prolly be OK. I think I put 97 on it, but I also run a MySQL database, Apache web server, and Visual Studio 6. And it has 256MB. Runs older games fine, too. T2 is a little sluggish, though I think that's the network adapter...
