I need new speakers for my computer... these built into the monitor ones suck............ So... I was wondering what you guys would suggest. I want the cheapest I can get but as nice as possible... Kinda contradictory, I know but after playing 2142 tonight with headphones and without... just the difference with headphones makes me want to get new speakers. Lemme know. Thx

Most any 2.1 set you can get will be OK for cherap. Creative's got some, and I bought some Logitech ones for a friend for 450 the other day. That's not too bad for decent speakers. I spent $150 on my Klipsch Pro media 2.1 THX Speakers, and those rock.

Altec Lansing is what I have. Even the $10 pair are great. They also have a 2.1 set for about $20 some at Walmart. My desktop computer has an old 4.1 speaker system from them that cost me $80 almost ten years ago and they still are awsome.

According to a recent issue of Computer Gamig World, the best speaker setup is a pair of good headphones. The kind that go over the ear and not those foam walkman types.

Noise cancelling headphones to be exact. ;)

Hmm, maybe i'll get this set of headphones that the rebate came with my 2142 game. Precision Pc Gaming headset. Looks nifty, has the noise cancelling mic.

Not the same. Asha is talking about headphones that actively generate noise that cancels outside noise, so you only hear what you're supposed to hear.

The freebies are the cheapo foam kind. I got the same deal with my BF2, actually.

How much do those noise cancelling headphones go for ?

The cheapest ones I've seen run around 50-60 bucks.

Here are some from Best Buy:

(Note that I have not used these, but I know for a fact that the Sony sound really good, but won't last long with the kind of use that you'll give them.

Sony - folding

Philips - behind neck

Panasonic - noise cancelling, sound good the one time I tried some at Best Buy

Philips - folding, with adapters for different jacks on airplanes (if you travel), also has a case

Your best bet is to go to a place like Best Buy or the home theater section at a good electronics store and see what they have and how things feel. With noise reduction and padded ear pieces, they'll have similar performance. But they'll all fit differently. And on the cheaper side of things, if you go cheap that is, you'll notice a difference in how well the phones suppress external sounds.

There are more expensive ones that actually sample the environment's sounds to cancel those noises. I think most of the ones I linked to have passive noise cancellation. They're great, but you'll definitely notice a difference between active and passive noise cancellation. Oh and the active ones you'll typically see on aircraft or helicopters up in the cockpit.

I just noticed that the last link there shows headphones with active noise cancelling. I'd try those first to see if you notice a difference.

But definitely keep fit and feel your top priority since with gaming you'll be wearing these for extended periods of time.

These are pretty sweet, Gambit was explaining to me earlier what noise cancellation is and I went searching and saw a few of them myself. I forgot to mention I would prefer a pair of headphones with a Microphone on them. The headphones I have now I like just fine but theres a short in the mic wire.

Alright guys, i'm ordering a mouse from this one site, and I saw a pair of headphones/mic that I like. Is this a good deal, 130 bucks for this item? http://www.razerzone.com/store/index.ph ... ucts_id=38

BTW, I plan on using this as my speakers. And I want to have like an all in one deal with the mic.

Looks very nice, and should for that price. It's more than I'd pay for a pair, but I doubt you'll have quality issues with it. Before dropping the bills, though, you may want to make sure you can return it if you just don't like 'em, or try them out somewhere.

Alright... i'm gonna bump this topic a little bit...

I have these nice headphones with microphone capability (the ones from above post). I love them.. But I bought some speakers because it does get rather old having headphones on 24/7. I ran into a problem.. Theses headphones have like the green plug for speaker, the pink plug for microphone, then like a yellow and a black for surround sound stuff i think. Either way.. I only have one slot to plug the green cord into in the back of my pc. I want to be able to use the headphones while the speakers are plugged in. But as far as I see it.. Im not going to be able to do them both together. Im gonna have to unplug one and plug the other in arent I ?

Is there anything I can do about this ?

P.S. Also these headphones like... the one ear seems like it cuts in and out and will work only certain times. I noticed that if i stick the microphone in the hole in the left ear (the one that keeps messing up) it will make the sound come back for a period of time then it cuts out again... Im thinking I may have ran over the cord with the computer chair or somthing? Should I try and get them replaced? I dont know if their under warranty or what.

For the wanting the headphones and speakers in at the same time, you can buy a slitter. At least around here you can buy them at a Local CVS store for about $7.
