A Day at the Races

No, it's not the classic Marx Bros. movie. I spent today in the cold and wind to do some shots at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. Given the lousy lighting I think I still pulled out some decent shots.

The first one stuck out to me because of the colors. Plus, I love seeing the musculature of these gorgeous animals.

The last two represent my first attempt at dragging my shutter and panning the subject in order to get the motion blur in the background. They were shot at 1/50 and f/20. Let me know what you think.

Gambino - wish you could've come. It was a lot of fun.

Me too. :(

I think these shutter-dragging shots are one spot an IS would help a bunch. Still, looks like you did pretty well. Were you using your monopod, or full tripod?

I was using a monopod. My lens was the 70-200 f/2.8 VR. I didn't try any of the panning shots with the VR disabled so I don't know how different of a result I might have had.

I ripped off about 10-12 shots as I was panning. I think I got decent captures on about 4 or 5 of them. I'm told that this is pretty normal so I'm not too disappointed.

Asha - you have no idea how much it means to me when people tell me that. Thank you!

The color in the first one is really something. Despite the fact that I hate horses, I really like the pictures.
