Update to the job search...

Post by XMEN Ashaman DTM »

Okay... here's the deal so far:

I'm still in the running for one job with DCMA (www.dcma.mil), and it looks very interesting. It could be the ideal job, except they can't tell me certain aspects of it. But they seem to have written the description based on things straight off of my resume. I don't know what is taking them so long to make a decision for an interview or not.

There's a job with the Navy at Whidbey Island NAS, and that's only about an hour from my parents' house. However, I'd be on my own for a lot of things and it's a software job. Plus, there would be times where I couldn't contact anyone for days at a time (security issues). I told them during the phone interview what I thought of that and that I'd have a family when I started the job. I'd stay in a similar pay grade to what I am now, but doing work on systems I can't talk about. Plus, I'd be doing work for the Navy's version of my home office; and my home office's competition in that community. This one fell into my lap because some folks saw my resume, and when a person several pay grades above your military equivalent (O-3/O-4), you tend to pay attention.

There's another job with Boeing that I just finished the pre-interview questions for. It's with phantomworks, and the description is vague and general (https://jobs.boeing.com/JobSeeker/JobVi ... 07-1017085), so that tells me that they can't tell me what the job is for until I actually start. But Boeing pays very nicely, and there is relocation money.

So, I've got three good prospects, and a LOT more at Boeing and several at DCMA. I think I'd like the DCMA job... especially if I were assigned to ABL: I'd know where all the skeletons were! J/K :p

I know the grass would be greener at any one of the three (hey, it's in WA state!). I just wish things like this didn't take forever.

Good for you Asha. :D I know exactly what you mean about the government taking forever. I applied with the FAA in May, and didn't find out until october that I'd been approved to take the AT-SAT, and I'm still waiting for the testing contractor to contact me.. The FAA Aviation Careers Division can't give me their number, so I have to sit and wait. I applied for a Terminal (Tower) position in Arizona and Nevada. I was approved to take the AT-SAT for the NV announcement, but the score will stand for both, if I am to be considered for both.

Here's to hoping for you and me!

I liked the Boeing post, except that someone can't tell the difference between a principal and a principle. :) Looked like a pretty good fit in some ways. AWACS and JSTARS? Cool!
I understand that secret military jobs have some restrictions but I think keeping you from your new family is a little unrealistic. Good luck with it. I know I personally would sure prefer WA over the Mojave.

Hat, they're starting to make a big deal now about ATCs retiring, so I'd think you'd have some options.

SH: I'm hoping for you! Though depending on the location in NV, it can be... shall we say, interesting.

I figure it will take some time for the government: it took nearly 5 months to the day from my interview to actually starting work at my current job. And the process to get an interview was approaching an infinite timescale. Blech.

Gambino: yeah, most of the jobs that you might get interested in that involve classified stuff are like that. The one Navy job sounded really cool though... it's just those times when I would be assigned to something and I could only say, "I work for the government", that can be very interesting since I would be on my own.

Anyways, I thought I'd post a short email I received tonight:

Matthew,

Thank you for applying to our requisition for a level 4 Operations
Analyst (64R) (Req#: 07-1017085.) We are interested in interviewing you
for the position. As the head of the interviewing panel, I will be
contacting you again soon to arrange a specific time; please note that
the interview will be conducted by phone. Thank you.

Ron Lopez

Good thing it is by phone since I am trying to save my leave.

Hooray for phone interviews!

Gambit: It's not that there aren't options right now, I've been approved to take the AT-SAT, so that's the biggest thing. As long as I can score a 70 or better, (Most of my friends from college got an 80 or so) I'm pretty much in, as long as everything comes back on the physical and the background check, (Gotta have that secret clearance..) and the psych (What, me worry?) exam.

Asha: I'm looking forward to Nevada, as the most retirements right now are Las Vegas, which would be nice to be in a populated area, and the money is MUCH better than say Reno. I'm sure there's plenty of Military stuff in Nevada, but that's mostly handled by the Center folks, and I'll be in the Terminal environment by all accounts so far.
