Basketball pics...

Post by BlackRider »

nobody on TPF had any comments... so if you guys don't mind, could you point out any thing I could do to improve my basketball shooting?

There is quite a bit of noise (IMO), should I be shooting at 1/400s F/2.8 to keep the ISO down?

Here's my post: http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum/sh ... hp?t=65314

BR - posting a link here won't work very well since only TPF members will be able to view the post.

I commented in your thread. Don't get discouraged about the lack of feedback over there. Sometimes you get a ton, sometimes you don't get much of anything. Sometimes you have to add an additional post asking for it. As you post over there more you'll become better known to the other members and you'll get more feedback in your threads.

Well Porsche, it seemed as though you had gotten everyone here to register at TPF.

BTW, thanks for the reply.

Darn it, thought I'd replied last night...

Anyway I said something along the lines of..

I don't know how to shoot basketball (so take this with a grain of salt) but the exposure and noise seem pretty good from these pics. You'd asked about dropping to f2.8 so you could bring your ISO down and I advised against too much of that for two reasons: 1) lenses often lose image quality when wide open, and 2) it compresses your depth of field even further, meaning your focus has to be spot on and you may lose more than you want. I don't know if you want to try dropping your shutter speed a notch to get that extra stop - you're using 1/400th. I don't think you want to slow down more than 1/200th, but as I said I don't shoot basketball. (And it looks like Wes is advising the other way.) That would let you drop your ISO to 800 instead of 1600.
Also, most TPFers will advise using Noise Ninja or the like to get rid of obvious noise, feeling that if you need the ISO, you need the ISO.
