The freedom he now experienced was lifting his spirits to a grand level. He could go wherever he wanted, do whatever he wanted to do. He was free to be himself now that he was out from under his father’s shadow, or at least hiding from it. It was time however to make his decision for where to go first or risk this freedom altogether. Standing at the star port with enough credits to buy a ticket to any of the nearby Starwolf planets and buy food rent a place to live for a few weeks, he had to get busy and get off the planet before his father found out and could stop him. Maximus gazed at a bulletin screen and noticed an advertisement for workers wanted on a planet just on the edge of Starwolf space. None of the listings really caught his eye till he read tree harvesting. Maximus lived on one of the coldest bases on Ymir and had never even seen a tree with his own eyes.

What the heck? He thought. I’ve always wanted to see a forest. There should be plenty of work at one of those ‘logging camps’ that I’ve heard of. And besides, I need to get out of here quick!

And so, with his one large metal case, Maximus approached the lady at the counter.

“How much for a ticket to Tamarack”? He asked, hoping that the ticket wouldn’t be too expensive since it was farther away one the edge of Starwolf territory.

The annoyingly high-pitched voice of the pleasant looking middle-aged woman responded after pushing a few buttons saying, “That will be 7,899 credits please” with a smile as high as her voice.

Maximus was silent and still for several moments as he collected his thoughts after being distracted by the contrast of hearing the shrill voice on an otherwise top-notch appearance. I only have 10,000 credits. If I go to Tamarack that will barely leave me with enough for a week. Though you never know how much the cost of living will be there. Hmm. Ah screw it, I’ll be fine. I’ll show my father that I’m better off making my own decisions.

After having made his decision, Maximus realized that the nice lady behind the counter was slowly losing her smile. He got out the credit chip that his uncle had given him but waited to place it on the counter till the lady said something more purely out of curiosity. The lady’s smile was completely gone now and was just staring at him with impatience.

“DO YOU WANT TO GO TO TAMARACK OR NOT!!!” the woman screamed. It felt like needles were being driven into his ears as Maximus tried to block out the sound and crouched down to the floor. “FOR CRYING OUT LOUD YOU’D THINK THESE PEOPLE COULD MAKE UP THEIR STUPID MINDS!” She rambled on in an apparent breakdown of some nature.

“Geeze kid, do you always have this effect on people?” asked the older rather rough looking adolescent standing in line behind Maximus while helping him to his feet. Maximus was in disbelief as he watched the security guards drag the now hysterical woman out from behind the counter.

“Not that I know of, but if this is going to set the tone for my new life maybe I should just stay home” Maximus said completely jokingly knowing in his own mind that he had to get out of there no matter how bad it was at first.

“OK, sorry about that folks. Seems Erica here hasn’t been taking her medication again. I’ll continue from here, NEXT!” Prompted another clerk.

“One for the next jump to Tamarack” said Maximus as he quickly placed his credit chip on the counter.

“Put my seat next to his please. Uh, that is if you don’t mind? I heard you say something about a new life and I thought I might help you out seeing as I’m from there.” Piped up the boy in line behind him again. The clerk, the boy and Maximus exchanged glances until Maximus simply said “sure, if you can work it out”.

“No problem, this jump usually has several seats empty anyway.” The clerk took Maximus’ case and handed him his ticket and proceeded to process the next boy’s ticket.

“So you’re from Tamarack huh?” Maximus asked while walking down the hallway to their gate.

“Yeah, I grew up there working at a logging camp. Not a lot of fun but I call it home... for now. What about you? Why in the world would you pick Tamarack to start a new life on?”

“You really grew up in a logging camp?” Maximus asked, a little surprised at the irony of bumping into someone who could lead him to where he was thinking of going before he had even committed to go there.

“Yeah. Is that so hard to believe? You didn’t answer. What? You running away from home or something?”

“Well not exactly, but sort of. I.... I need to get away from my father and become my own man. My father is trying to dictate my life for me even though I am old enough to decide what I want to do myself”.

“Ahh, I see. But where did you get all that money?”

Maximus hesitated a moment wondering if the whole reason this boy was being nice to him was to try to rip him off, but dismissed it when he remembered something his uncle had taught him (Character is rarely evident on the first impression. Don’t judge a book by its cover, or the first page). And so again, gambling with his future he decided to trust the boy. “My uncle gave it to me to help me get away from my father. Thankfully he realized how out of line my father is”

“Hmmm” the other boy voiced to let his understanding be known. “Tymber” he said as he stretched out his hand.

Not sure what to think, Maximus donned a confused expression and shook his hand.

“It’s my name” said the rough boy.

“OH! Heh, sorry.” Maximus apologized. “Maximus is my name”.

“Maximus?” said Tymber with an equally confused looking expression.

Maximus said not a word but replied with yet another expression that seemed to say “and you should talk?”

Tymber laughed a little and shrugged his shoulders saying “Right, right. Nevermind. Well lets step it up a notch, our gate is at the end of this hallway and they’re going to be making the last call soon”.

“Last call already? But we just bought these tickets”

“Yeah we did. Great timing huh?”

“Well I’m glad I didn’t miss the jump altogether. But I’m not complaining because I can’t be sure that my father won’t hunt me down even when I’m NOT on the planet, so the sooner we get out of here the better!” Maximus explained as he walked more rapidly.
“Alright then Max. Say can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.” He said, accepting the abbreviation of his name by smiling a little.

“Do I seem familiar to you? Because I can’t shake the feeling that I know you from somewhere even though I haven’t been on this planet before this month since I was a toddler”.

“Can’t say as I really recognize you from anywhere or anything, but I guess you never know huh?”

“Yeah I guess” Puffed Tymber as they started running down the hall upon hearing the final call for Tamarack.

-LSD-
