Neat trick to use when moving old hard drive to new system
One of the major issues when keeping your existing hard drive with your current Windows load and then moving/upgrading to a new system is that the Windows configuration files are set to your old hardware. This often causes major headaches and system instability after moving it to the new system.

I found a very simple fix browsing through my computer magazines.

The configuration data lies in a Windows registry folder called "ENUM". You have to delete it in order to force Windows to redetect all your hardware, thus avoiding configuration conflicts.

To do this:

First backup your registry. Click on Start, Run, type in "regedit". Then click on File, Export. Save the file someplace else on your drive where you can remember it.

Now, while in RegEdit we can find and remove the ENUM folder.

In the Registry Editor (Regedit), open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. Inside it you will find a folder named ENUM. Delete it by right clicking on the folder and selecting Delete.

If you are running Windows 2000 or NT then the ENUM folder may be under the SYSTEM folder under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Do this BEFORE you shut down the OLD COMPUTER and moving the drive over to the new computer.

Install in the new computer, fire it up. Watch it detect all the new devices. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Hope this helps you.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmeniceman.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Iceman at: 7/26/02 10:58:53 pm
