networking and cable modems
What are my options?

I ask this because I noticed that when I tried moving some files across a quickly setup network consisting of a hub and a cable modem, that there were two IP's (one for each computer). Both IP's were static, and both were on different subnets.

SO... I asked my dad what the cable company said when he talked to them about setting up a network. They said "yeah, sure, that's fine. We can handle that."

Now, I think my dad my have been charged for two IP's.

I was messing around with my fileserver trying to set it up in such a way that I could use it as a router. No such luck. I think I can do it with Linux, but that means taking apart my third system and re-doing everything to make it into a box that does what I want. It's been awhile since I messed around with Linux, and I never got into the server type stuff too much. I got into setting it up for parallel computing, and as a client that could connect with my school's systems.

I have enough computer equipment for two fully-functional computers, and enough for a third without a mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Also, my dad's machine is in the other room.

SO...without going out and buying a router, what are my options?

Thanks!

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

Re: networking and cable modems
Get a Router, Asha. Then you can cancell one of the IP's, and save $5-7. Then, all your systems can be online and sharing files and printers. It's the easiest, most cost effective way to share a cable Internet connection.

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

It really is. It can stay on all the time, it's small, it doesn't have fans to make noise, and it does everything you'd need it to do. It's the most secure, most failsafe, and easiest to setup solution.

(It just so happens that I still have my Barricade for sale, too, if you're interested.)
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

You betcha. I paid about $160 for mine cause I got it at Fry's, early on. But it's still flawless.

Asking $50. In addition to its router functionality, t's a 4-port 10/100 switch, plus 1 WAN port. It's also a print server. It has a serial connection so you can log in that way, or hook up an external modem to it for emergencies. Normal configuration is easy via a web interface. Set up a DMZ and/or port forwarding if you like. Comes with original (very skimpy) documentation and CD, which contains the printer port drivers for the print server and additional documentation in .pdf format. Flash ROM is pretty well up to date, not sure when exactly I last updated it. Plus you get free tech support.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 8/26/02 5:23:13 pm
