Building a computer HD problem.
I took the HD out of my mother in laws, Gateway PIII 700 system and put it into a new Athlon XP 2100 system it will not boot.

Now the HD is running WIN XP PRO. I can put it back in the PIII system and it works just fine. As soon as I put it into the Athlon system is brings up that screen that ask you if you want to boot to
safe mode
safe mode with blah blah

last known working condition

normal windows.

then it almost boots and goes to a screen that says

Windows has detected an error and has stopped to protect your computer
please check for virus's, check your HD for finalization, run Chkdsk /f etc. then restart.

Here is my question, the HD works normally in it's original system could this be becuase of XP? That thing that XP identifys the system its in and won't work in another. And the other question is can i get around this or is it Reformat time?

996
Cerberus of THZ*
XMEN
Dragon Talon Merc

<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/hosted/jester/mi ...

Re: Building a computer HD problem.
I had that problem too.

The only way around it was to go pop the HD in another computer, back up data.. then reformat and reinstall XP with the HD on the new system.

But there might be other solutions.

Yep, sorry to say that XP is not near as flexible as older versions. You can remove the ENUM registry entry in other OS' and that makes the OS redetect all the devices, but you can't do that in XP. It does what you just described. The only way that I have found after doing alot of digging in the Microsoft Help areas is to reinstall.

I am sorry Jester, it is a buncha crap, but that is what XP does.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Member of THZ - The Hounds of Zeus clan

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

You guys don't even want to hear the similar problems that I've had when working on a computer for a friend of mind. Twenty hours later, and much help from Gambit, this machine STILL will not run Windows 2000 as a stand-alone O/S. It HAS to be set up to dual-boot with Win98 and I cannot get the vid card to run at anything other than standard VGA mode. This machine is the bane of my existence right now.

<table *****'Filter: Shadow(Color=#0000FF,Direction=225)'>

<span class=''usertitle'>
XMENPorsche[DTM]
Retired Leader - XMEN
Retired Leader - DTM
Eater of Chicken Fried Steak

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." - Wayne Gretzky

"One of the hallmarks of a disciple of Jesus Christ is that he always leaves things better than he found it." - Chip Ingram
