XP hard drive ?
Ice read this and advise

Found in Ov forums

Posted: 1/24/03 4:54:17 pm
Attention ALL Win XP users
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to your Device Manager and check to see if your hard-drive controller (not the HD itself) is in UDMA mode or PIO mode. Seems that during install, XP has a hard time setting the correct mode.

Mine was in PIO and was causing me horrendous slowdowns both for booting proggies and while running them (lots of HD thrashing). To change from PIO to UDMA, all you have to do is "uninstall" the controller from the Device Manager, reboot, let it auto-find it, reboot, and you should be in UDMA mode.

The difference was dramatic.

Recoil

<img src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/hammer_ ...
Proud Member of the XMEN Clan
Proud Member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries
If you run, you will only die tired.

You can try it, should not cause any system problems. If it did set itself wrong then he is right...it should make a significant difference in hard drive throughput.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Member of THZ - The Hounds of Zeus clan

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Break it down! It's Hamma time!

Here's how to get to what he's talking about:

Log in as an administrator.

Start > My computer
Open that.

Then on the left pane of the window, click on "View System information" in the "System Tasks" area (expand it if you have to).

That will open a new window.

Hit the "Hardware" tab, then click on the "Device Manager" button.

Expand "IDE/ATAPI controllers", and right click on "Primary IDE Channel", and select Properties.

A new window opens, and hit the "Advanced Settings" tab.

You should see what mode it is in currently, and a couple of selection boxes for what mode you want it to be in. Assuming that you have current hardware and XP detected your hardware correctly, your "Current Setting" Box should read:

Ultra DMA Mode 5

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... dtm>Jester DTM at: 1/24/03 7:20:59 pm
