I have a question that I don't think has been asked before..
Ok- I've got the Asus A7N8X Deluxe mainboard, with the onboard SATA controllers, and I was wondering if I enabled the SATA, and got an SATA drive to be the master, would I still be able to use the Primary IDE for a slave drive? I have a CD-RW and DVD-ROM on the secondary IDE, and those are both staying, and I want to add another harddisk to my system, as my 60GB HDD has about 6GB free, and I haven't quite sold the wife on a DVD+/-RW yet....

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Short answer is yes, at least on similar PATA/SATA boards I've read about.

I have the same board, and have read alot about it, can't member where I read the stuff one of those tech geek sites that Gambit usually points people to. The impression I got was that it didn't matter where the Master was.

<b

996
Cerberus of THZ*
XMEN
Dragon Talon Merc
Allied Tribal Forces

<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/hosted/jester/si ... >
<img src="http://www.danasoft.com/sig/THZJesterDT ...

So If I enable an SATA drive as the master, I don't lose the primary IDE controller? For some reason I thought that the SATA would take away the IRQs associated with the Primary IDE.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Correct, it shouldn't interfere. You can have both controllers active at the same time.

AFAIK.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

On our board the SATA acts as a Raid. So it shouldn't be any different than a standard raid array

<b

996
Cerberus of THZ*
XMEN
Dragon Talon Merc
Allied Tribal Forces

<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/hosted/jester/si ... >
<img src="http://www.danasoft.com/sig/THZJesterDT ...

I don't want RAID... I just want 2 Hard Drives in my system so I can expand my storage space.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

I doubt you'd be able to run RAID across the different interfaces. It seems pretty unlikely to be supported in hardware. But possible - there's such things as software RAID these days.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

Jester, you need to fix your sig or something... everytime you post, you squish the message text more and more.....

I'm not concerned with running RAID at all... I just want to take advantage of having true SATA performance, and take advantage of the increases it involves, and increase storage capacity.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Re: I have a question that I don't think has been asked befo
Hat, I don't know about the ASUS board but on my ABIT IS7 you can run both the SATA and IDE at the same time or disable either from the bios. They are independent of each other. I assume that if ABIT does it ASUS does. I have 2x40gb IDE right now and I am adding a 80gb SATA as soon as maxtor sends me the replacement drive.

Don't worry Hat, after today I won't be posting for another year and a half.

<b

996
Cerberus of THZ*
XMEN
Dragon Talon Merc
Allied Tribal Forces

<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/hosted/jester/si ... >
<img src="http://www.danasoft.com/sig/THZJesterDT ...

The formatting is fubared, yes, but IE is sloppy and forgives this particular error. In my case anyway.

Re: I have a question that I don't think has been asked befo
I checked it in IE, and it does forgive whatever formatting error that's occuring, but I use Firebird, and it's not so forgiving.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill
