Someone explain...

..the RAID features on most new Mobo's. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to picking out my new equipment so theres not too many terms that I don't understand, but RAID has seeminly slipped under my radar. First I heard of it was when my friend Matt built a comp two years ago and bragged about his having RAID and mine not. What's it do? Are there different types? I am no expert, but from what I remember about RAID... I believe its a bug spray.<br><br>Seriously though I believe RAID is a term for hooking Hardrives together to acomplish somthing, I believe there are three basic types that are used, although there are many more versions that aren't (I think 7 total)<br><br>Basically you have Raid 0, Raid 1 and Raid 1+0 (I think thats what they are called)<br><br>For each of these you need at least 2 hardrives <br><br>Anyways one version (think its 0) basically writes half the information to each drive making one drive that reads and writes faster. Of course if either of the HD's gets corrupted you lose all your data because you only have half the info on the other HD.<br><br>Raid 1 would then be write every biot of information to each HD, basically it will make a backup of your data as you write it, its the same speed as having only one hardrive, but you get backup.<br><br>the 1+0 would then be a combo of the two and require at least 4 drives. basically you have 2 sets of 2 drives, so you get the benifit of both speed and backup.<br><br>Also RAID has been around for a while, but mainly in servers because of the high cost involved made it impractical for desktops in most cases. Recently however costs have come down some as HD's get cheaper and all. <p></p><i></i>
