OK, try not to freak out folks. Yes, I'm talking about a console game, and yes it isn't Tribes.

I'm one of those crazy people that got hooked on the Metroid series of games ever since the very first one came out for the NES waaaaay back in the day. I still remember biking down to the south side of town to meet up with a buddy, and we'd work on it together.

And so I was a Metroid freak. Beat the game, did the whole Justin Bailey thing (beat it that way, too), and managed to find everything. When Super Metroid came out, I beat it, too, thoroughly enjoying the process.

Metroid II and Fusion I've had chances to play as well, and each is quite enjoyable.

Today, though... today I went and spent the 200 bucks I've had in a special part of my savings account for the better part of a year and a half. That's right, I went out and bought Metroid Prime and a GameCube to go with it. That game is the only reason I've bought this console, the first since I owned a SNES.

So I went out on lunchbreak and snagged Prime, the GC, and a memory card. Took 'em home, hooked 'em up (this is also the first time the TV I got last year has been turned on or hooked up to anything, btw), and let 'er rip.

Oh my.

I only had a few minutes to really play it, but what time I did have was quite engrossing. When I get home tonight (and after the match), I'll dig into it a little deeper.

More impressions to come!

Yup, Metroid's definitely one of the best console series ever. I just got back from playing Prime at my friends' apartment and I'm very impressed. Challenging, fun, excellent graphics, they even did a great job adapting the old Metroid music into it. It might have my vote for console game of the year (need to play more)
------------------
XMEN|FireFro[DTM] --- "I hate shocklances"

"Maybe Tycho dosen't like MegaTokyo because it's a bunch of hyper-cute self indulgent self pitying highly idealized escapist trash that epitomizes the absolute worst aspects of Anime fandom.

Or hey, maybe there's another reason." --- august

Metroid *is* the bomb. Super Metroid just might be the best super nintendo game ever made, and its total awesomeness is the only reason I'm looking up from my copy of Fusion right now to write it.

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a target=_top href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a target=_top href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ...

Well, this has been mooooost entertaining, guys. I played three hours of Prime after the match was postponed, and I hadn't even realized it had been three hours. It just sucked me in.

So far, my impression is still very, very good.

Rundown:

Controls: Well, it was a double-whammy for me, as I'd never used a GC controller before, not having owned a GC before today.

At first, it was quite difficult to get myself oriented, as I'd never played a first-person game without a mouse for the last six to eight years or so. Then, once I got things figured out, it started to click.

The neat part is that the game is evoking that old feeling that really good games used to--you can definitely feel that while you'll understand how all the controls work and how the manuevers are done, there will always be many levels of expertise to them. Right now, I'm at that 'not entirely used to the controls' phase, but I'm above 'rank newbie'. I've got the moving around down cold, though I need some work on the jumping. Halfway through a big-ass fight with a bunch of little tiny enemies, I figured out that you could take advantage of the lock-on system by rapidly alternating the lock and fire buttons, which lets you paste multiple targets with one or two shots apiece very quickly.

While the buttons aren't remappable, you can swap around the d-pad and the c-stick mappings, which are the two controls you use to switch weapons and visors. Nice touch, as the c-stick is definitely the faster of the two when it comes to swapping things around.

Jumping: I was worried about jumping, having suffered through the horrible sequences in Half-Life and a few other FPS games that I've played. I needn't have bothered. When you jump, the view automatically swings down a few degress so you have a good idea of where you're going to land. Somehow the proportions feel right as well, and I've only accidentally walked off a ledge once so far--the game does a great job of giving you a good sense on the location of Samus' feet at all times.

Graphics: Ummmmm... wow. I'm impressed. You won't find super-sharp textures all over the place, but they aren't really needed. The lighting and atmosphere more than make up for it. And Samus herself looks VERY sharp--I had to look hard to find vertices in her model. The shiny refelections from her armor are just extremely well done.

Atmosphere: This is where this game really shines. I haven't felt paranoid like this since I played System Shock 2. I think it's the 'helmet cam' viewpoint of the game. You can always see the borders of the helmet and the HUDs that it projects onto the faceplate, and it makes you feel like you are Samus. I've learned the hard way to kill little tiny creatures that go 'splat' at a distance, after the visor got completely clogged with green alien guts. When it rains, droplets form on the visor. When I went through an airlock and got blasted by a jet of air, the visor fogged up for a moment. I've even seen Samus's face reflected in the visor when a really bright flash goes by--intense.

So far, there hasn't been any voice... but I don't think the game needs it. The information you get by scanning various items is more than story enough. The pirates call me 'The Hunter', and I've found little notes in computer systems detailing what they did after the events of the first Metroid. There's all kinds of runes to read in the ruins, and little pieces of info scattered about in wall panels and the like.

The opening sequence was veeerry moody. As I went through the abandoned space station, I found all kinds of corpses lying about... and none of them human. Scanning them would tell me the means of death, some of them quite horrific. There were a few moments where I'd see a pile of bodies lying around, and all of them would have similiar descriptions, and I'd be going 'ohhhhh (*&@#' when I saw that the bodies were still warm.

Challenge: It's been ramping up slowly but steadily, a nice gentle curve that has a little bump in it every time you get a new item or something. Nothing's been impossible so far, but everything has been a steady challenge, which tells me the designers put a whole lotta thought into the placement of baddies and how they attack.

There's all kinds of neat puzzles so far, and I can't wait to see some of the hairier ones later in the game.

Save points are, so far, kinda rare, which I like. Since save points also refill all of your energy, the sparsity is more than made up for.

Overall: Get this game. If you don't have a GC, do what I did and buy one just for Prime. It's worth it if you like and enjoy the kind of gameplay Metroid offers.

After another bout with the game, I have this to say. I really, really, really like the bosses so far. Challenging, and each requiring a some brain-work mixed with a smidge of tactical maneuvering, but not impossible.

The slower pace of this game is juuuuuust right... there's enough action to keep you from getting bored, but there's plenty to scan in and read about as well as numerous mini-puzzles to solve.

And so far, I haven't found even ten percent of the items, and it's already been something like four or five hours into the game. I'm pretty sure it's going to take some real work to find absolutely everything.

It's insane how many Items designers can put into games nowadays.... I've been Playing Kindom Hearts for PS2 for a little over 8 hours now, and I've only unlocked 3 of 12 worlds, but I only have 1 completed....

I HATE EZBOARD!!!

Things have gotten interesting now. I have enough items in order to do some real exploring, and I've got three major areas open to such. Plus, I've got all of tonight to get down and really start searching.

I've uncovered this strange temple left by the Chozo... apparently, they have some kind of legend going on (or did, as the Chozo are all, um, dead on this planet) and what they've been writing has been creeping me the hell out. Lots and lots of prophecy, and I think I'm figuring into it heavily, as is some Unnamed Bad Guy. Considering the size and challenge of the bosses so far, I'm none too thrilled about what a Big Bad Guy might be like,

Surprised a trio of Space Pirates last night, and they had on jetpacks! Smart. They even ran away when they saw me. Very smart.

BTW, the music in the game really well done. If you remember the themes from the original Metroid, you'll find that they have been reprised, and well, in Prime.

Magmoor Caverns is a great area just to look and marvel at. I've found secret networks of pipes that you can use to avoid troublesome areas, and they're a hoot to go through. There was also one amusing little puzzle where I had to roll up and go underneath a grate-floor in order to get past a dead-end. The only problem was that the underfloor was inhibited by these brainless little hunter-gatherers... when I rolled close, they'd grab me in their pincers and take me back to the entrance (their 'nest'), then spit me out as if I was a morsel of food they were saving for their young. Nothing surprised me quite like the lava residents, though. Here I am, cruising merrily through a cavern, minding my own business, when his huge magma-snake rears out of the lava ahead of me and commences to breathing fire all over the place. Took some doing to kill it the first time, and I actually cheered when its head exploded and the body sank back down into the lava. "Bite me!"

Particle and flame effects are very well done, by the way. Lighting has been getting more and more intricate and moody, drawing me further in.

Can't wait to give it some more play tonight!

Whew! Just finished a looong-ass marathon of Prime, and I'm still quite impressed with it!

Just recently got done with what, IMO, is the best boss battle I've played in any game... ever. Very challenging, but not cheap in the least.

Said battle is you pitted against a gigantic rock monster. At first, you have to give it a once-over with the scanner to find out what it is (btw, most bosses in Prime work like this, and dodging fire while scanning is quite the skill to work on), and then once you do find out, the challenge begins. The boss has weak spots, but you can't see them unless you use the thermal visor (more on that later). Only when you've got the visor equipped can you even lock on to the weakspots. Then, when you blast the spot long enough, the rocky covering falls off and you have to switch back to a different visor because the rock skin was keeping in the majority of the heat you were seeing... visor overload!

So you switch back to normal vision, and you can lock on to the weak spot that way. The rest of the battle consists of chipping away at the numerous spots while trying to survive.

Oh yes, surviving. That's the hard part. See, the rock monster likes to freeze you solid (with the appropriate--and blinding--ice crystals all over your visor) and then pelt you with boulders. As if that weren't enough, he will usually curl up in a ball roughly the size of a house and come barreling right at you. Worse, later on in the fight, he calls in a monster snowstorm, thus rendering your normal vision range down to just a few feet. You can see through it with the thermal visor... but only if you haven't uncovered a weak spot.

There's some very nice cinematics for this boss, and there's even a bit of humour thrown in as well. I certainly laughed out loud after I'd finished him.

As for other things I've seen....

I finally got a new visor, the thermal vision one. Technically, it's just slapping a different skin on the world, but it's so well done that it looks just like you'd expect infrared vision to look. You can see doorframes through walls, and you can even discover switches and the like with it. Cloaked monsters you can't see at all without the thermal visor, and battling them with it is quite the experience.

Ran into a planetarium as well. It was very nicely done, complete with relavant info on the system's planets.

I've for-sure seen the 'face reflected in the visor' bit now, and let me tell you, it's quite unnerving, as it only happens when some really powerful shot goes right by your face. I'll have to double-check, but I could swear you can see Samus's eyes tracking the projectile or the baddy you're locked on to when it happens.

I've been fighting some jet-packed Space Pirates latey, too. These guys are nasty, not because they can rain lots of firepower down on you from above (which they do, in copious amounts), but when you specifically target their jetpacks with the thermal visor, they realize they won't have a ride for much longer. So what do they do? Barrel right at you, engines on overload! Great big explosive kamikaze attack. Freaked the hell out of me the first time.

I've also fought my first metroid. Unnerving, dangerous fight that was, for it was in a smallish room and I had no Ice Beam.

Controls have sunk in now, big time. I'm dodging, strafing, swapping visors and weapons in the middle of a fight, you name it. The scheme really works well.
