Modern Technology wonder

Post by Dark Knife »

Okay this may be no big whoop for some of you but to me the shear distance is awsome.
Gots me a webcam and used it sunday to see/talk to my parents and brother(+hiswife&baby).
At the same time.
Delmas my brother lives in Chicago.
My parents live in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
Man oh man I never could talk to my parents or anyone else for 30 minutes (usually 10). We all were online for like 3 hours!
There were some difficulties in refresh rate and a mega firewall from Saudi but it was totally awsome. Audio wsa fine.

Question how do you take a screenshot of windows so I can get all three of our webcams in a picture?

The flip side is it was like 7-10 PM in Saudi and my father was in his old tattered brown robe. Im trying to get his mother to get DSL so that he would have to dress up for her.

Well, PrtScreen will capture the entire Windows screen to the clipboard, and you can then paste it into Paint or Photoshop or whatever. But if your software uses an "overlay" type functionality to put the pic on-screen, the capture may not work right. Usually only live video is "overlaid," though, so it might work for your little web conference.

Congratulations, BTW - I've still not done that.

PrtScn captures the entire image on your monitor.
ALT-PrtScn captures only the active window.

Another alternative is to take a digital photo of the screen. The higher resolution your screen is set to, the better.

What software are you using? My new laptop has a built-in camera so I've been thinking of setting up a camera here at home to talk to the honey.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Software

Because of issues with the Saudi Firewall (Yes the Whole country has one huge firewall) we switch between Yahoo Messanger and MSN. Usually Yahoo works best for our situation.

How does it work? Peer to peer? Is it free?
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

yes, yahoo is free, just runs through the messenger, and uses webcam mic, for audio. just open an IM, with a friend, invite them to view your webcam, and click the audio button, to enable the mic!
yahoo is also better, because if you can, there is super cam, which runs as close to real time, as I've ever seen. I do not particularly like MS mess, for webcam, because image size is(was? haven't used it in awhile) so small.

http://home.earthlink.net/~nilkilla/Nil ...

You might try Hypersnap DX (LINK) to capture images from the webcam. HDX is for all intents and purposes free, as you can keep sending in for new demo registration codes as often as you like.

I've never got the Yahoo super cam running. The button is always disabled even when its only my brother and I.
Also the frame rate depends on the server hosting teh webcams traffic. A lot of traffic SLOW web cam. But still interesting.
