Heh, I have a lot of books, for 2 reasons.

1) I've worked at companies that didn't allow employees internet access. I'm fortunate where I am now the managers are willing to fight to make sure the programmers have it, or I wouldn't have it at this job either. That said, the internet is still the best resource, but books will save ya in a tight spot.

2) Programming books are thick, heavy and generally tome-like. I like that image that they contain some kind of mystical secret to be revealed, if you know where to look.

And Comment, comment, comment!

-LoS-Malthus

Lords of Steel

"Everyone can be taught to sculpt: Michelangelo would have had to be taught not to. good place to start, tools.

Write something that could be recognized as handy. Spruce up the source with lots of comments, comments, comments, and add it to your "portfolio". You may be able to use this portfolio when interviewing.

You also might be able to get yourself into a part-time job maintaining someone's website, or even writing a custom program for them. You'd have to work awfully cheap for a programmer, but it's awesome money for a student. And physically easier than most jobs, tho I'm not sure about the one you've got now.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

I am quiting my Busboying job as of this Friday (I turned in a 4 week notice). Basic programing is required in the state of Texas for all engineering College students. I will need to be able to make test programs for testing microchips, if I decide to stay in Electrical Engineering. My brother is a double E and he has had to make many programs to test some state of the art technology. I just want to program mainly for fun but also to help expand my knowledge. I already know the basics of HTML from my Webmastery class in high school.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Don't Recal Who Said This

Learning how to program is useful no matter what discipline you find yourself in. It's like typing or basic math: It's another tool in the toolbox. If nothing else, knowing basic programming lets you complain to the guys who are paid to do it as if you knew what you were talking about.

Perl would be a good non-programmer language. It can be used to create GUI stuff using Tk. But mostly it's good for chewing through text, doing searching, sorting, pattern-matching, etc. And there's lots of free add-ons out there for doing anything imaginable.

A great code for engineers is MATLAB. I've found that even though it is not as fast as C (because of overhead), that it is great for writing engineering stuff in. Mostly because you can be somewhat lazy with it and it still does what you want it to. I have done a lot of mathematical problem solving using it (<a href=http://www.amath.washington.edu/courses ... -2001>this kind of stuff), and designed control systems for various things using it (<a href=http://www.aa.washington.edu/controls/i ... l>controls lab). It's neat because you can program the stuff in MATLAB, then if you REALLY want to, you can translate those files into c code using a built-in compiler. It even comments everything well.

The single reason for engineers existing: laziness.

But the thing to remember when starting out is the concepts behind the language. That's what makes a programmer.

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

BR and others looking to learn, A great way to learn and help out others (if you can find the time ) is to volunteer your services to a local charity. I worked for a company that did this to keep it's developers busy and learning during the slow times. The boss would cold call the charity and if they were interested hand it off to one of the junior developers to work with from concept to delivery. We treated the charities like any other client (with much more flexible deadlines ), and the developer in charge got to learn project management as well as keep their skills sharp. Plus, you have the knowledge that you helped out somewhere. The downside is you rareley, if ever, get paid for your work.

-LoS-Malthus

Lords of Steel

"Everyone can be taught to sculpt: Michelangelo would have had to be taught not to. I would like to lend my services to my church to help it out. I can do many things that will be needed once out building is constructed.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Don't Recal Who Said This

Hey, another controls guy! I'm not really one myself, but I work with a few here:

www.newpo ...

My code is more about communications (serial/USB/network/backplane) and I also keep all the makefiles and version control functioning.

This sounds like some kick-ass stuff!!

Quote:

Newport Corporation's wafer positioning, vibration and acoustic isolation, and optical systems provide the accuracy and repeatability needed for reliable results, and the speed and dependability required for high throughput applications. I'm mostly around the wafer positioning stuff. It's accurate to sub-nanometer levels. Moving stuff like this, moving many inches in a few seconds and then stopping on the nanometer, is like landing the space shuttle and stopping literally on a dime.
