Well, I looked on pricewatch.com and found some sub-$500 Dell laptops, but they only have 256 MB. You may have to start with something like that and upgrade the memory. I paid a little extra when I got mine to get my memory on one stick and leave the other slot open - haven't used it yet, but I've got the option.
I think you may have to check the stores and ads in your area. If I were buying a used notebook, I'd want to check it out personally and/or deal with a vendor who I can trust to support it, at least for a little while. Watch out especially for screen damage and worn-out batteries (though the batteries can usually be replaced).

I've been playing with nothing less that 1GB since the Planetside Beta, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I even got 1Gb of RAM on my HP zx5000 notebook. (and the 5400 RPM HDD) So I can play WoW full featured, and T2 is OK, and T:V looked great on it. I just need to get the damn thing even when it's plugged in to stop paging to the HDD all the time.. I think it's a laptop thing, cuz even when I'm plugged into the wall, I have the same problem, and this machine is setup almost identically to my desktop, and is running the same stuff on it.
