IBM has partnered with a number of universities because it is concerned that there are not enough people entering the field of computer science to fill the growing demand for IT workers.

And... how many techies did IBM lay off in the last year or two? Tens of thousands, wasn't it? Opened up new offshore projects in India, etc. too, didn't they?

Lawyers they've got, but it seems like they could use a little more work on the PR to paint a consistent picture.

Let me explain.

Newbie out of college cost WAY less than the older more experienced person that you have invested thousands to train. Someone who can solve problems quickly because they have been there and seen it.

Oh wait...it makes no sense to me either.

Yeah, this is weird. Usually IBM's smarter than this kind of foolishness. Well... except for killing off OS/2... and not marketing the Model M buckling-sping keyboard to the public any more... and uh... man.

The Register has fun with it as they so often do:

Hopefully, IBM and Red Hat will also hold some classes on how US developers will find jobs here after the two companies have sent the majority of their work to India, China and elsewhere. Funny though, nothing like that was mentioned beside "jobs of tomorrow" anywhere we looked.

Well...crap hit the fan at work....the company that I have loved and worked so hard for all these years went public a few years ago. Raises have diminished, management pay and stock benefits have made them rich.

Now they gave notice to our IT Helpdesk people the other day that they have one year to find another job in the company or they will be given a severance package. At least they are giving them that.

I am sad about how becoming a public company has degraded a special place to work into another big company.
