Losing a pet is hard...

Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

Losing a pet is hard...

Post by BlackRider »

...having lost many before doesn't make it any easier.

One of my rabbits escaped from her cage during a big storm the other day and I didn't find her until this morning... on her side, unable to sit up. I think she was spooked by the storm and ended up breaking her own back. (Its actually somewhat common for a rabbit in a confined space to accidentily break its back when spooked.)

So, in the last 12 months I have lost 7 cats (from work: 4 to cars, 3 to natural causes) and now a rabbit. Also, 4 times out of the 8, it was my favorite pet that died.

Dead of natural causes is easy, dead in the road is hard, but watching them suffer is the hardest of all. I've never had a pet put down before. The closest to it was sending my pet sheep off to slaughter and even though that was the idea from the start it was still REALLY hard to do. Now I have to do it to a rabbit that still had 5-6 years of its life left.

Sorry, BR. I've not had to put a pet down myself, either, though Dad did a few when I was growing up.

My condolences. It is very hard to have a pet die.

Sincerely,
David

I know what it is like. We had a dog that I grew up with since birth. She got of the age where her body started shutting down from age. She stopped eating which ment she stopped taking her medicine. I had never lifter her up before and had seem my Dad struggle with her size over the years. That day she did all she could to stay at home. She layed down in her bed and I picked it up. It felt like she wasn't even in it. I had to hold her to the vet and then watch her as she was put to sleep. It was a sad day for me, a friend since birth was gone. That was almost 10 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday still.
