This is from Space.com, in this article they talk about a study done by a Private Company that has determined that they could do what NASA is proposing for a fraction of the cost with existing technologies or ones almost ready for use.

You can't read much Heinlein without thinking this could be a Very Good Idea.

Of course, it could also turn into a Very Bad Idea later, but I still think we need it.
