See what happens when you overclock a processor too much

Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

See what happens when you overclock a processor too much

This is a video of two guys doing "Extream" overclocking of an AMD processor which leads to an explosive ending.

Lol.

Thermal stress is a great thing. :D

I was just suprised that the guy removed the heatsink/fan with the computer on!

Where I work we have some great videos of lasers punching through missile skins/tanks. They're the low power versions of our laser. :D
But it's the same, sudden effect as in that video (complete with holes and things!)

Here ya go:

These videos are of an Army program called THEL. It's a very capable laser weapon. But it's also a dueterium-flouride laser, which produces such fun things as hydroflouric acid, hydrogen gas, and so on. (note the sarcasm). It's probably not going to be used to protect things when its exhaust gases eat away at those things. :D

You can see the exhaust gases coming out of the laser in the artillery rocket test.

I can only point out photos or videos that have been cleared for release. So that's all I've got.

Asha, did I tell you that one of my high school classmates went into the Air Force and ended up working on these?

In those pictures... which one's you? (jk)

That was cool to see the rocket warhead start glowing red. I think I'm more amazed at the tracking on the laser than the laser itself.

I mean... shooting a volley of 3 mortars... wow.

Sooo... I guess the exhaust area is a no smoking zone then? :)

Gambit: Yes.

Does he work out at AFRL? Or is he with AFOTEC? OR, does he work with one of the programs, but at HELSTF?

Tracking algorithms are pretty straightforward. Not always easy, but still very much on the straightforward side. It gets more difficult when you are at longer ranges because things vibrate on a chemical laser (pumps, valves, regulators, etc.) But it's not impossible.

The exhaust area for the THEL is definitely a "nothing you want to keep" kind of zone. ;)

Don't have a clue where he works, or worked. Last time I talked to him was in '98. :)

Three mortars? Damn.. It's not like those are very long range weapons, and the time required to track and destroy 3 of those little bastards is not very long indeed.
