The Wait is over: Dell launches AMD Desktops!

Dell chairman Michael Dell announced during the firm's "Technology Day," held today in New York, that the company will begin offering AMD-based desktop computers starting this Wednesday.
Following Michael Dell's announcement yesterday, Dell today released configuration pages for its initial AMD-based systems this morning. The computers can be ordered now and the company promises to begin shipping the built-to-order systems later this week. Dell heavily promotes the green party, which indicates a long-term commitment to AMD.
I found this on their order page:

About stinking time.

Maybe they thought this would help their sagging stock price?

Dell not using AMD chips is a big reason why I didn't go with them when I bought my notebook in 2004. At NWA, we use exclusively Dell systems, so it'll be interesting to see what they do in the next year or two when it's time to upgrade all 9500 desktops that are in use throughout the system. (We have MANY more systems, but most are dummy terminals running some antiquated software that works well for us, but isn't the most user friendly, mostly for our reservation systems, and flight processing, etc.) Our machines are currently about 3-4 years old, and the portfolio department is just now going with Office 2003, which IMO is a bad move with Office 2007 just around the corner. Then again, we're still running Win2K on all of our systems, which is still a great OS in our environment, but I think a version of Vista will suit our needs a little better, but I'll bet we won't see it in the control center for at least 2-3 years after release...
