Update on the Iceman
FYI,
A few months ago my company of 23 years decided it was time to put me out to pasture. They came in on a Friday with an HR rep and told me my job was no longer available and had me pack of my things. Talk about shock!!!
Worse was that it as just a couple of days before taking my girls on vacation. Still went, but was a weird feeling knowing I had no job coming back.
Luckily they gave me a nice little severence package along with placement assistance for several months.
I took a month off then I started hitting the job boards. Now luckily my old company decided a couple of years ago to make me the Microsoft SCCM Administrator for our two manufacturing plants. That turned out to be a huge advantage during my job search. The job market in Texas for IT workers is pretty hot so I starting getting job interviews immediately.
But...something new came along. I got a phone call from a company in Chicago. Intrinisc Technologies, LLC. They are a Microsoft Gold Partner who specializes in consulting with very large companies in operating system migrations via SCCM and their own customized software. The CTO and I talked for a few hours and hit it off. He told me he would get back with me in a week or two. In the meanwhile I continued interviewing with other companies.
A couple of weeks go by...nothing really interesting piqued my interest...I get another call from Intrinsic. They want me to work for them. Now they have never met me in person, just read my resume' and talked to me on the phone. They make me an offer. I work out of my house, travel and work with clients onsite up to 75% of the time, PLUS they pay me more than I made before and a yearly bonus based on company performance.
Done....been with them from August. I have been traveling quite a bit. Worked so far with Zales Jewlers, Xerox/ACS, Smuckers, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and lately SeaWorld. About to go to work in Washington,DC for the FDIC and SEC. I love it. Nice walking into a company and being listened to and not have to deal with the politics.
I just finished my Microsoft Certifed Techincal Specialist certification for the Deployment of Windows 7 and Office 2010. Working on my server certs now.
So don't despair if you lose your job...sometimes it is for the best. If I work close to some of you soon I will see if we can meet for dinner or such!
Sincerely,

I am currently on a contract rolling out new PCs for BASF and it's a damned idiot job that A+ certification was required to get. pure DERP.
I'm trying to transition from the A+ related work into entry or intern level software development or database development. There are many jobs in Houston, so I'm hopeful.
