Re: NWN Tactics
you are right, Red, if you have already entered combat mode and try the Power Attack, it says "Cannot use that feat with the selected item!" *or something like*

However, the game is flawed, but you can enter Power Attack Mode and THEN shoot. Test it out, and you will see what I mean.

That sounds like cheating, Rav.

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a target=_top href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a target=_top href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ...

Re: NWN Tactics
Hehehe, I had no idea I was cheating the system! Maybe the next patch will change the ability to cheat that. I used a lvl ONE Elven Barbarian with Power Attack with my Longbow, and he struck with 12 points of damage, then he hit a critical and did 20 pts! Single shot.

So, its nice, but its wrong.

See, this whole thing started because I love Rangers. Its the mystique. And though they cant do 10d6 (lvl 20 rog) backstab damage, I wondered why they were the top archers of the game. Its a close one, but Rangers get four attacks per round at Lvl 20, and using Rapid Shot with a Mighty Bow, (adds STR damage) and the Ranger can really hurt you.

A rogue gets three attacks per round, and needs a teammate to distract the enemy while he backstabs. So, the winner in a straight fight is the Ranger, but the winner in a more open playing field is the Rogue.

Re: NWN Tactics
The real winner in a straight fight is the fighter.

While the ranger is supposed to be "the best archer" (and also "the best at dual-weaponry), no statistics confirm this. The ranger's bowmanship is no better than his feats, and a fighter can trump him easily if he wants.

Quite frankly (and I mean this in the nicest possible way) rangers suck. I'm offended, too, they're one of my favorite classes, too, but they didn't get the respect they deserved in 3rd Edition. At least NWN 'fixes' the glaring weakness in the favoured enemy system by making bonuses against all favoured enemies equal.

For more on how I think rangers SUCK, contact me via ICQ.
Also, floating around the Web is an 'unofficial errata' by Monte Cook (it's legal to own, it's not a textbook PDF or anything) that actually makes the ranger a valid class again by improving spellcasting and weapons slightly, but I'm still working on my own house rules for the practical ranger.

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a target=_top href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a target=_top href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ...

Re: NWN Tactics
I am testing out Improved Disarm for my Half-Orc Fighter, and I am impressed! Take the knife away from a thief, and watch him beg for mercy! Every time he attacks me, he provokes an attack of opportunity, so I get to hit him twice for it! Most Thieves dont have the discipline to resist the attack, nor the Improved Unarmed Strike to avoid the attack of opportunity.
Though a high level thief gets a bonus against all attacks of opportunity, the tactic is still in the favor of the fighter.

Use it against a mage with a magic staff, to help clear him of the power he can have with one of those things. Then follow up with Knockdown, so that the mage cant cast stuff.

Rangers dont have the Discipline to resist this tactic either, so their dual wield bonuses can get taken away by disarming them.

Paladins also can be disarmed and knocked down fairly easily.

All in all, Power Attack, Cleave, Disarm, and Knockdown make a Fighter a battle hardened warrior. He is still open to a lot of weaknesses against magic and the like, but once I get some things that make me immune to fear effects, and stuff like that, my fighter will be one mean character.

Next up! I am going to test out the Parry Mode more thoroughly... its unique to NWN, but seems pretty interesting.

"Patience is a virtue ... for other people." -Ravok

Re: NWN Tactics
Note that in pen and paper D&D, a ranger or paladin won't fall for disarm tricks nearly as much. Disarm is based on "to hit" rolls, and not any kind of skill check, and so the fighting classes stay on top of this, and aren't denied their precious skill points which can be spent elsewhere.
(Note that the skills in NWN have taken a heavy beating, and so the few skills that fighters have aren't as useful, hence the creation of discipline and parry).

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a target=_top href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a target=_top href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ...

Re: NWN Tactics
Rav-meister Tactical Update::

Fighters. I love em. Until the enemy decides a domination spell might make things ugly, that is. Anywho --

AC = Monks can get the highest flat AC of the game as they go in levels and use their Dex modifier, but I have a Fighter with a 13 Dex that has an AC of 24 at level 6. He uses a tower shield and bastard sword combo to both get some great Defense and some awesome hits on the enemy. One would think a thief with a high Dex could potentially have a great AC - but that is not so. There are a lot of classes that beat him out. Cleric/Monk/Fighter/Barbarian/Paladin to name a few - so keep your thief in the dark, and use allies to help you make most of the sneak attack. DUH.

Improved Disarm = If you are a melee character, this is a great weapon to have. Get that 13 Int so you can take advantage of this awesome deal! Knocking the weapon off a mage, a thief, or even another fighter is great! without Improved Unarmed Attack, each of these classes will give up an attack of opportunity each time they attempt to strike you in melee. That gives a Fighter at level 6 (2 attacks/round) a bonus! And man can it crush an otherwise heavy hitter.

Improved Unarmed Attack = For those that enjoy fighting against live opponents. Get this Feat. Anyone can fail a roll, and get their Bloodsword of Doom knocked out of their hands, and be forced to go unarmed.

Besides, you wouldnt want to miss out on Stunning Blow. A Fighter gets a LOT of chances to get Feats. A Half-Orc fighter gets a LOT of STR to use those Feats. Knockdown is good, but Stunning Blow is better.

Save Weapon Specialization for a bow-type weapon. I like a Fighter/Druid/Thief as my Archer. They can have their 20% XP penalty, because I will have Sneak Attack, an Animal Companion, Weapon Specialization, and a host of archer goodies to make use of those arrows. If you are in a party, and not going alone, a Half-Elf Ftr/Thief is sweet! Level 2 FTR/ level 18 Thief. Just enough fighter levels to advance your bowmanship to a plus 1 attack/ plus 2 damage. With arrows, every point of damage counts.

Sure you wont have an Elf's bonus to Dex, but you wont get his penalty to Con, either. Use the numbers wisely, and you can get an 18 Dex soon enough. Sure you may not get a 20+ Dex, but if you really want to, take the 20% XP penalty and be an Elf with the same setup. It will take you a little longer to level up, but 20% is a small step backwards, really. Plenty of room to push your elven Dex to some sweet levels.

There is no single character that can do it all. However, knowing what you want to do with your character allows you to swap out penalties and bonuses, giving you not only the ability to roleplay a specific type of character, but a specific type of bonuses and penalties along with that character's personality.

One interesting character I liked, was a Level One Sorceror, level 19 Paladin. Why? well, a Paladin with a Pixie helps him detect traps, scout out terrain, and do all sorts of things, like use magic wands and what not. And roleplaying a character like that is to say that he gets his magic abilities from On High. I even used his spell casting abilities to good use. Giving him Charm Person, so his quest for swaying people to his cause was bolstered. Sure, not every situation would allow him to use his abilities, but it sure was fun having a Paladin with a companion.

"Patience is a virtue ... for other people." -Ravok
