Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

Unplanned upgrade

Post by XMEN Gambit »

Sigh. Fry's Black Friday ad got me. I was earlier planning to upgrade this year; the last time I built myself a system was 3.5 years ago for that last quasi-megaLAN party. But with replacing my car and the like, I wasn't in any hurry. Then I saw this CPU/mobo combo for about $100 less than the CPU alone should have cost. In keeping with each new system being at least twice as fast as the old one, I have replaced my Athlon64 3000+ with an Intel Quad-core Duo Q6600. An Athlon X2 6000 or 6400 was actually more what I had in mind but the Fry's price was ridiculous. That plus 2 GB of dual-channel OCZ RAM and an PCI-E nVidia 8600 GT and now I've given my old PC a nice little brain transplant. So far I seem to have gotten away without a reinstall. Have yet to run any games or benchmarking on it, just got it running.

Seems nice, running most of my games at 1280x1024, 4x AA, etc. Only thing that's balked at all at that level is Oblivion. I've not tried the Crysis demo. ;) It's certainly an improvement.

BTW, this is the first BGA CPU I've installed. Way easier than the old pins. I like!
