I've had it up to HERE with school!

Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

I've had it up to HERE with school!

Post by BlackRider »

(/me holds hand as high above his head as he possibly can.)

I'm sick and tired of wasting my time and my money going to class and not learning squat! UC is sooooo high and mighty that I cannot test out of any of these stupid classes... I have to just take the classes and pay my tuition. Well I've completly wasted 2 years of my life that I can never get back and over $20,000 on books, tuition, fuel, parking, and misc fees. I haven't learned anything and I'm not scheduled to learn anything new for another year and a half yet.

I'm not going back to UC next year and maybe not even next quarter. I think I'm going to take the next year off and rethink what I want/need out of college because I'm not getting anything now.
COLORS!

yeah right... I require a box with some leg room... like a refrigerator box or something :P

I'm just going to look for a different school... I can't tolerate UC anymore. (Also I've developed a personal dislike of a few of the deans here.)

I could always go back to lawn care and make $60k+ a year. BR!

Some of your pre-engineering classes may have dumb material in them, but are required for you to have the structure, thinking, and skills to properly look at engineering problems later.

Trust me when I say that if you are taking a class on statics, and believe me when I say that statics is easy, and all you are doing is busy work, then you should focus on how you organize your answers:

given info

problem statement

assumptions

analysis

conclusion

The presentation of your work, the structure it is in, and how neat you are will be qualities that you must have for later engineering courses. I've graded some work that was just trash because the people did not learn proper ways to write reports. They had their answers, but it looked like garbage in the way they presented it. So I gave them 'F's. Had to otherwise they would never learn.

But I've been in your shoes for pre-engineering stuff, and how stupid things seem. I know what you are thinking with some of your classes.

The other thing to consider is that if you can take all these easy courses now, you'll pad your GPA. THAT is something to consider. Especially when you realize that upper level courses are not as easy as they seem.

I'm not one to advise on this subject, since I quit college after getting my Associates for similar reasons as you... but stick with it. With the economy as it is now, you want and need every advantage you can get when it comes to getting a job later on.

Don't know what engineering you're studying, but Asha nailed the entire point of engineering disciplines. Sure you learn some nice equations and all, but the main thing to learn is how to approach and solve new (or old) problems. I'm a degreed mechanical engineer so take that for what it's worth. I'll even through in a "Atta boy" if it makes you feel better.

Prepare to be BURNINATED!!!

I'll agree with the "sticktuit" encouragement here, but you don't have to stay at UC to finish up. You need to find a school that suits you, but it helps if you have the name recognition for your resume later. Keep in mind that a potential employer will likely be more inclined to interview/hire you if you graduated from a school s/he graduated from or has a favorable impression of. I've personally seen that characteristic in action more than once.

There WILL be profs, deans, and other people/things that you won't like about ANY school. Get used to that, it's life. How much stuff is there that you DO like?

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

I'm pretty sure I'm going to take a year off. I'm already too far into debt and further loans are diminishing and I can't pay for it any more.

I'm also having second thoughts about weather or not I want to follow through with engineering. (Technically I'm in computer science but I was moving to mechanical.) I had a desk job over the winter and I didn't like it. I want to be on my feet all day.

I found a 2yr Ford Technician program that interests me. It guarantees me a $40k job at a dealership. (You need a Ford dealership to sponsor you to get in.)

Nothing's for certain until the end of this quarter... I might not even be able to get my tuition in for this quarter. I can't even register until then.
COLORS!

If you like to work on cars, you can make as much or better as a Tech then quite a few white collar jobs that require a degree. Technicians aren't nearly as ignorant as too many people take them to be, and todays automobiles require an enourmous amount of knowledge to be able to repair. You will constantly be learning as the models and the technology involved in them changes. It's also a great job if your into cars

I spent 10 years working in the parts departmets of various new car dealers, and I developed a real respect for some of the Techs I worked with. In every business there are morons, but a smart tech that keeps improving his knowledge is worth his weight in gold, and typically paid like it. The top level (A tech's, every job in the backend (parts and service) is graded by skill level) were making between 70-100k a year. For comparison, I left the business as an A parts counterman making 35k and that was considered well paid for a parts guy.

Real Geeks don't make there own backups.
