"The solution is by using an intrusion detection system. There are many solutions out there, and my favorites are the free ones. And in some cases, the free ones are some of the best products around. One commonly used tool to monitor network traffic is Snort. Snort is an Intrusion Detection System: think of it as a Virus Scanner for Network Traffic – but it’s much, MUCH more than that. Like a virus scanner, it is signature based which means it looks for a particular pattern in the network traffic that signifies a malicious packet. This is in contrast to anomaly detection, which looks for anomalies in traffic compared to a baseline of normal activity."
