No, although you might have seen (or not ) that some pirates customise their ships, and so do some civilians

The lighting is a combination of laser discharge and muzzle flash from the laser fire.
The above was taken from The-Abyss who is the Site Admin of the Egosoft X-universe site: http://www.x2thethreat.com/x3/forum/vie ... de02156b19

Apparently you can customize they way your ships look through paint jobs and changing the muzzel flash of weapons. At least thats what it appears.

Yeah Freelancer was alright with a mouse... I may have to wait for my b-day (christmas) to get it and a joystick. Keep me jealous.

Titan in combat and station under attack:
http://www.egosoft.com/games/x3/screens ... en_112.jpg

People in the UK have begun to get copies and have run into problems. Apparently it was shiped with errrors that are poping up frequently on many systems, such as Joystick not working, crash to desktop, sounds and videos not working right, and saving in certain places causes crashes when you load that save. Thay are working on a 1.2 patch that should solve most of these problems and have it released soon.

People have posted that they didn't see muchin changes in the graphics when they went from maxed everything to min everything. Also they had a sense that the universe was alive from all the movements around them, saying that it was hard to find a system in the beginning that didn't have over 40 ships flying around. Also your starting ship isn't a lowly, weak, M5 but rather an M4. Several players said that because of what they saw around them and knowing that the economy was dynamic, expanding, they felt more of a need to get into it before great profit potintial is taken by the AI.

Also only the Home systems are reported to be close to planets, other systems are further away from planets and have a lot, and if I under stood the players that said this a hell of a lot time 10, more space to explore in each sector.
Capturing works abit differnet, i havn't tryed the comm options yet but i got a few pirates surrending when i was attacking

unlike x2 the ship doesn't become urs when they eject, it becomes unowned and u have to get in ur space suit and go over to it and claim it so it becomes yours
This quote is taken from a player off the X-Universe forums: http://www2.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=95509

Right now it looks like it would be best not to buy the game until 1.2 patch is released, which according to history for the X-series is the patch that makes the game playable for majority.

Here is a guide of tips from one of the Modderators on the X-Universe forums:

http://www2.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=95810

Also here is a little more info about capturing ships. When you first start you have to manually go over to an abandoned ship to reset its security to follow you only. Later on you can buy a software upgrade for the ship you pilot to do that remotely by targeting it and choosing the claim ship option.

Read the guide, it gives no spoilers about the plot or missions you can do, to get an idea about how the game works. It is completely different from X2 and I fear that by playing X2 it will be even harder for me to understand X3 when I get it.

Here is what I have been ready lately:

1: Mobile Minning wasn't implemented but should be brought in on a later patch.

2: Major glitches have been found in the plot, such as finding a particular iteam before your ment to. In some cases it forces you to restart if you want to continue, in others it prevents you from completing the game.

3: There are abandond ships scattered through out the universe, many of which are better than what you start with, but be carefull because there are other suprisses lurking.

4: The AI has gained and lost some intellagence, they think more on their own but if they are selling goods they return home before looking for a new place to sell their load if the first place didn't take it all or was filled by an NPC. This also affects the sector traders who's cargo bays get filled up by random goods they didn't sell before finding something else to sell.

5: People are really enjoying the new way of capturing ships, having to claim them and then enter them to be able to give them orders for the first time. This has allowed for more captures to survive to be sold. Many people are reporting that is how they have finaince all of their ships and first dozen factories.

6: Some people say they now have large complexes that require only 2 transports to sell certian goods, the rest are transported through connecting tunnels to the stations and allows any station to sell any goods produced in the complex. They estimate that this has saved several million credits worth of transports they were able to put into adding more stations to the complex to make it completely self sufficent.

All in all, this just seems to much work. :( I hate to micro manage but it seems more and more that is what is detailed in the game. As pretty as it is and all.

What people are looking for, WC, is the ability to do what they want. :) You don't HAVE to manage a factory complex to succeed at the game, and you don't HAVE to be an ace pilot, either. An awful lot of people buy a game like this just to explore someone else's imaginary universe.

BTW, TW, your constant X2 updates have got me back into that game.

I guess taking the speech class helped me sound more like a sales man when needed.

Looking at other peoples computers that have the game has made me decide to hold off from getting it untill I can get more RAM and if possible up my processor.

Current System:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67 GHz (I can over clock it some to get it to 2)
512 MB DDR (I know just uping this would help the most)
NVIDIA Geforce3 Ti 200

I don't have my motherboard book with me to say how much it can take but I believe I can almost double my processer without changing boards. My big problem is I have less than $100 I can spare for my computer. I will send an email to my brother to keep an eye out at Fry's in Austin, Tx, for me. He can bring it up to me this christmas.

Wildchild, what do you want to do in the game? Maybe if I can get a better understanding about what you want out of the game I can either bring to light things that you are interested or point you to another game that might better suit you.

Gambit, think of it this way it was your posting that got me into the game and then buy it off ebay. I had imagined comparing my Empire to yours and getting tips about the best places to place stations. I had also imagined what it would be like if we could be in the same universe at the same time, as if it was a server we played on.

Too bad none of the X's had multiplayer. I would love to play on a server setup where we can work together conquring the Universe together. But I know there would be a problem when we get the first capital ship when we all want to pilot it at the same time. The game would be awsome if it was multiplayer, but one can dream that they are playing along side of their friends for the time being.

A new theory has been developed: Theory of Free Ships

Apparently the game starts out with a couple of abandoned ships scattered across the universe. Either over a set time or after so many have been found more become abandoned for the player to find. These ships range from M5's to M3's and TS's. Some are fully equipped with weapons and shields, others have one or the other, some have low level of both, and few are just empty. This is another way to award players for exploring. Be warned though, some of the best ships found to date have been in some of the worst sectors to capture.

Another theory: Blocking the Competition

It is being seen that stations have only a small number of docks for ships. Players are reporting that they have been able to cripple factories and open up monopolies by filling up the competitions docking bays with captured fighters making it so traders can't dock there to sell or buy goods. People have mixed emotions on this, some seeing it as a valid tactic to carve your place in the economy while others say this is unfair as it eliminates the challenge.

On another note:

Strange things have been reported about the game. The Boron and Argon empires have apparently gone to war in most games. Boron battleships have been reported to have blocked Boron gates when an Argon Mammoth was used by a player to bring a station to a Boron sector. As soon as the Mammoth went through the gate it was destroyed by the collision. Also pirates appear to be a dieing race. The different Races have been reported to attack any pirate base in or near their borders. Many players have said that there was a time they couldn't find a sector with out a pirate but now after finding Pirate stations gone can't find a single pirate in 2/3rds of the universe. It is believed that Pirate Bases will re-spawn after a set time but many people are angered because they can no longer work on race relations or earn more money because they choose the war path as their careers.

I have been trying to keep up with what is said on the X-universe forums. I will continue to bring what I think is interesting here.

Honestly. I was hoping to highjack ships while in dock. The intro intriged me a lot.

I really don't know what I want to do. Freespace and Freelancer said they were different and you could do anything or be anything. But in fact you couldn't. I don't know what I would want X3 to do for me. I want to have fun with it though. Micromanagine an empire, while not what I want to do sounds like fun. I don't want to run it but I want to do it. Make sense?

I may get it but I would prefer to be able to play with others instead of by myself. I don't know I just seem to have more fun when Im playing against other people whether they are beating me or not it is stil lfun to know what I am playing against isnt scripted.

Thats just me.

I know what you mean. I wish it had a server option so I can play with you and Gambit, and anyone else who wants to join in. But for now it is only a sinlge player.

There are multiple starting choices in the game, one being a trader, another being an assasin down on luck, then the story, and one more that you have to unlock. The final one I think will probably be what you want. The final starter is you play as the Khaak! You stand alone against the universe and some how, everyone is tight liped about how, upgrade your ship to better conquer the universe.

Also there are complex kits to connect your stations thus removing a lot of the micro managment. Any station connected to it shares its resources with the others, to my understanding. Thus if you built a SPP, Wheat Farm, Bakery, Ore Mine, Silicon Mine, and Crystal fab it would only require 2 ships to sell extra power and extra crystals. With out the kit it would have taken around 14 shps to maintain them all. Also the game encourages you to buy Carriers because stations can no longer hold huge amount of ships.

Over all I think you will find what you are looking for. The business end has been smoothed over some and the fighting end is a lot more interesting acording to forum posts I have been reading.
