I'm hoping so. Check out the stills of the Enterprise.

One thing it's not, and that's canon. Be interesting to see what happens to Trekkies/Trekkers now.

I may have time to see it this weekend. Cant this week as I've been tossed onto some projects with deadlines looming and will have to pull some over time.

If you've not seen this yet, the aforementioned still shot. I think it says a lot:

I dunno, I think the new Enterprise looks a little....squished or something.
Do, or do not. There is no try.

We just got back from the early matinee. We liked it.

Abrams goal was to make Trek a little more approachable for the young 'uns. And I'd say he's done it. Lots of action, worked in a lot of old references (sometimes a bit contrived). Personally I don't think the Enterprise herself got enough screen time a la TWOK, but I'll forgive him this time. :) I think the ship is nifty.

Plot's a bit weak but hardly the worst I've seen in a Trek film. They changed the past, so this supposedly excuses some of the variations from canon. Gobbledegook is bad (again hardly the worst) and there's a few obvious factual flaws (Saturn's rings do NOT have a magnetic field, sorry!) I liked Captain Pike. Not so much the Romulan baddies. Spock's probably a little too human, but acceptable. The thing with Uhura... not so much for me.

Overall I guess I'd grade it a B+ but as always YMMV.

Definitely is what that's for. And it leaves almost all of the original situations from the old series there for them to play off of if they choose. Nomad, V'ger, Apollo, Trelane, McCoy's rare disease, Spock's pon farr, Guardian of Forever, not to mention Khan from the episode Space Seed. The planet eater, the flying pizzas from Operation: Annihilate (which killed Kirk's older brother Sam), the Horta, just bunches of stuff.

Some things they'd probably have to do differently would include the giant ameoba-thing that got the Intrepid (The all-Vulcan starship). Undoubtedly there'd be changes in Amok Time.

Hmm. I babble. Will stop now.
